should I ask for raise

i’m working as a machine learning scientist for 5 months for a starup in LA area and TC is 165k (only salary as there is no 401k and the stock options are 40k per year on paper though!) my role is very critical for the company and since i joined they have been able to deliver a few products in a timely manner with way higher quality (compared to what they had before). they are about to raise another round and probably promote me to manager level. i think folks with my skills have TC 400k-550k in big tech companies and i think this is a big gap because even if the company is sold at the price they raise investment currently, those 40k stock options would mean only $40k stock. i’m thinking of either asking for a raise of base to 250k and stocks to 150k per year. or starting my own side business of consulting/advisor in ml domain. what do you think is the best? ps: i really like the work i do. i like that i’m currently leading the ml team. the work life balance is good. my only concern is that i would rather to not move my family or have to commute long hours to have a new high paying job.

Not sure if I ask them and they can’t do it, no relationship is damaged..

that raise seems very not happen. why you want to get paid so little to begin with? You can try ask for raise but better to have counteroffer ready from real company that know worth of good engineer

So little? I wonder what would be a better number to ask from a startup? Counter offer requires prep and interview and potentially offer from another city, which I wanna go that route as the last option..

Offer from other city? Counter offer very easy for engineer on west coast...

Ask for raise or jump, you could be making a lot more for your skills

How old are you? You obviously want more money and know that you’re worth more. You have a few options. 1. Leave for FAANG. Relocate. Get the TC you think you deserve. 2. Ask for more but nearly a 100k jump is pretty presumptuous. If I were your manager, I’d be surprised you were asking for such a change. 3. What made you accept their offer in the first folate?

Hmmmm I'd think twice before asking for a raise that early. I've seen some pretty sad stories about employees who asked for a raise, got it until they found out his manager only paid for it to look for someone else for 2 months and not lose the workflow immediately Like others said, be honest with yourself and think whether you can get easily another job you would be asking for. If so, then it is really okay to ask. In my case, I was craving for a promotion for about a year and a half, never happened, so I just left in good terms. The other job gave me the promotion I wanted so bad
