slack morale w/ stock cratering everyday

whats the culture like at Slack these days. stock has absolutely cratered- down 50 percent from where it opened on market. a lot of employees who didnt cash in and held onto their equity must be kicking themselves. are people jumping ship?

Facebook initially dipped after the IPO too. It happens. From one perspective, it's more rational for engineers to hold on to their equity if they're confident in Slack but have no competency in fundamental stock analysis

I started somewhere this year and stock is already down 30% below the price my comp package had in it. Sucks but still worth toughing it out so I can get my vesting and not get the clawback of my bonus. After 1 year though it does start becoming tempting to shop around... 1 person has left my team but most people, while following it, don't seem to think it's any reason to leave. I wonder about We Company though... that is a sinking ship if ever there was one

It turns out IRC 25 years later for business isn’t a 10 billion dollar idea

I've been impressed how many times we (as humans) have reinvented IRC.

To be fair, they did it in a 2019 context, with desktop mobile and web apps. Their notification workflow is also really complex, they wrote an engineering blog post about it

Honestly, I don’t look at the stock price that often. Even at $23 it’s still above where I thought it was going to IPO. So what that it fell from a higher number? It’s still going to net most employees more than they thought they would get if you had asked them a year ago. If you watch the stock price on a daily basis at any company you’re going to exert far more mental energy than it’s worth. Morale here is fine. Attrition is way lower than I would have expected after an IPO.

Are you a SWE? Perspective seems contextual here, if you’re a IC versus higher up the food chain :)

The higher up the food chain, ic or management, the more stock you have. I’m not sure why you think it would be different if IC or manager... for what it’s worth, the majority of my compensation is in stock, and I still feel fine. If my TC were more base less stock, I’d be even less worried about the decline.

Most of us are now rich, so not much “kicking ourselves” going on.
