looking for pointers to prepare for square onsite for ml coding interview: are you supposed to code the algorithm from scratch or you can use packages? for ml architecture: what are some of the area of focus? #tech #interview #square

Can you share your interview experience?
There were 2 phone screens and 5 virtual onsite interviews. The whole process took me about a week. The first phone screen was a pair programming session with a fairly simple data structure design question. The second phone screen was a 1:1 call with the hiring manager. Virtual Onsite started with 2 pair programming questions, one was easier than the other and I solved both of the questions, though in the second interview I had asked a few hints. The last three interviews were machine learning-based, on which third was based on ML and DL basics such as data collection, data pre-processing, feature selection, supervise and unsupervised algorithms, and evaluation methods + regularization and weight initialization and gradient exploding/vanishing. pretty standard :-) The fourth interview was ml programming, I cannot remember the problem but it was based on NLP and I was successful in writing code and train the model with fairly high performance. I would suggest practicing writing code in PyTorch or TensorFlow before the interview as you will not have enough time to look for things over the internet during the interview. Finally, the last session was an ML system design, I was asked to create an end to end system for intent and slot filling problem. I nailed the Machine learning sessions, but I had to ask for hints on the pair programming which leads Square to move with another candidate. My experience was very positive, and if I am going through the process again, I will try to write a VERY VERY clean code on the pair programming and try not to ask for any hints. Hope this helps someone. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or comments.
Thank you for sharing details. Was the first ml interview basically a knowledge test rather than coding? And how was ml programming problem picked? Was the role about NLP or did you already have experience in it? It can be hard to code a new type of model even if you know general deep learning and frameworks.
Hi, can I DM you? TIA!
Hi @bose, was the first phone screen based off of LC questions?
