Hi, I am currently exploring making a career shift from account management/brand partnerships, into a more direct digital marketing role. I come from and Advertising background and am looking at digital marketing programs to enroll in within the coming months. I’m curious to see what people’s experiences are like? What is salary like? Career projection and mobility? Etc. This is a big leap to leave something stable, so any insights are welcomed! Thanks!#marketing #marketing #digitalmarketing
TC?
Why are you making is shift ? From what I know people in marketing sees brand partnership as coveted roles
Go learn SQL, excel, R and python. Digital marketing (I.e performance marketing) is a data heavy role
Hard agree on SQL especially.
Agreed. I took this route and it's been the best decision I've made!
The digital marketing programs I’ve seen really set you up to be a great entry level digital marketer so salary will be pretty low ($60s) and you’re going from the ground up again.
If you have an account management background, I would look for an AM role in the digital media ecosystem so you don’t have to take a step down in your career and can move into the industry. You can always get out of account management later, but that could be your door. If you don’t want to be an AM, you could look at becoming a media planner or campaign manager, but those are more junior. Career mobility is great, but only within the digital media space. We hire a lot of people who all come from the same adtech or agencies and they all know each other. You could expect to move around in various sales or account management roles at an agency. If you joined adtech, you could do the same but that offers more options to move into B2B marketing or product management, depending on the company culture.
I wouldn’t mess around with the low end. Get into a CMO-focused course and in the meantime aim for mid-level roles as a content manager or digital marketing manager. You can pull in anywhere from $80-155k in a mid level role.
Depends on your YOE. If you are <=5-7 YOE, I'd suggest to take some A/B test course and SQL course, then go into product marketing with brand partnership & account management experience. If >8 YOE, I think you might be better off pursuing a leadership position with the background unless the idea of digital marketing really sparks you.
Differs between agency/in house (have experienced both) TC can greatly increase after a few years of experience

It really is broad on what you mean by digital marketing. Performance/Growth, or Demand Gen, Brand Mktg? Salary is decent for the work involved and gets much better as you get more senior. Entry level salary lately hadn’t been too bad, was shit when I was entry level. Look to get certified in Google Ad products and HubSpot etc will give you an edge. Work beats out degree for me. It’s fairly easy to jump around to companies and even marketing channels but harder to go from Performance to Brand without the experience.
What's the work difference between performance and brand?
Brand is more focused on the full picture of a product/company and the strategy and story telling to market something. Performance is all about the acquisition, like SEM/Paid Social and it’s very metrics driven.
