Hi, I just accepted an offer from Deloitte in the M&A DD area, (I am 24 yo) I would like to break into investment banking in 2-3 years, is that possible? also what do you think about M&A in a big4? is it a good job?
I second the post above. Maybe consider MBA or work your ass off to network with bankers to make your way into IB MnA.
Stay away from deloitte
Definitely agree with this one
Why?
lateral is possible with good networking and luck, but prolly better to do an mba at an m7 school. ask on wso instead btw maybe some ex deloitte m&a people can chime in
You’d likely have to start as a 1st or 2nd year analyst. Would recommend only staying at Deloitte for 1 year if you’re seriously interested in moving to IB.
Right now market is really hot, you might be getting into Investment banking on the tail side of market bull run So choose wisely
It would be easier to lateral to IB if you have valuation experience rather than DD. You may not get a top IB job but a good shop is definitely possible
Stay for 1 year or less, otherwise MBA is the best route
It’s a reasonable start but I would actually suggest keeping your ear to the ground for IB gigs right away. The staffing at banks right now is under huge pressure (some groups are down over 50% yoy in terms of junior staffing). Try to take advantage of the supply shortage.
Is this everywhere or just nyc? Recently started at Deloitte M&A as well, working with bank clients- would just like to understand how to go about it
Everywhere in North America is what I know of (no sense of other countries). Deal flow is through the roof + WFH essentially dehumanizing the workflow means junior staff are taking the brunt of it so there has been massive attrition across the board.
As others have mentioned you need to start working on getting into IB NOW before even starting at Deloitte
If you're talking about a lateral move without an MBA, there are definitely people who've done though it's VERY difficult. Check WSO for more info about this, Blind is skewed towards tech
