Hello, I'm a recent CS dropout. Dropped out after 1.5 years (out of 3.5) with a GPA equivalent of 4.0. Did extra courses during the 1.5 years so total amount of education is around 2 y. I just got hired as a SWE at a small company and plan on applying to FAANG+ in 4-6 months. I want to keep my education on resume as otherwise I don't really have much + I have good GPA and projects. Should i write "dropout" next to my education period like "2020-2022 (dropout)"? Or should i just leave the dropout part off my resume, but be open about it when introducing at interviews and so on? Plan on applying through referrals, so I don't think they scan my resume but i am not sure. Thanks! YOE 0, TC 45k (EU) Why drop out? I dropped out bc I wasn't challenged enough and believed I could learn more by myself/at company. I also really felt school was draining me because i was spending a lot of time on things that doesn't really matter or make me better imo. The last 6 months i didn't even show up for class or use TAs since I could figure out how to do everything on my own. I'm not really gifted, i just enjoy spending a lot of time on my work which i felt like was very unrewarding in university. I learned so much the first year but after that I began to feel like i didn't get much more out of it. So i tried to apply some places and ended up getting a job. #engineering #software #swe #google #facebook #meta #apple #amazon #snap #netflix #uber #dropout #university #faang
You can write what you want. Just don't lie.
Yes you should write "dropout", and prepare an answer to the question why you did that (like you already did). If you become a good engineer, that 'dropout' line will become an interesting fact in your resume. Anw, you seem like a great guy with a character and willing to take responsibility for whatever you do. Just want to wish you all the best!
Thanks for the comment, it mean a lot! I will make the dropout part clear on my resume.
You could write that it is unfinished and on pause since you had good opportunity in the industry. In a couple years you can just say it is unfinished.
You should go back and finish. This will close doors for you. It isn't a death knell but you are just making your life harder
Maybe an easy online program would do as well. You just need the diploma at this point
^ yes any diploma. Just show that you can finish what you start. That is all that matters.
Go back to school and graduate. Having a bachelors is a requirement of SDE jobs at Amazon and other FAANG. You could work while in school or do other things that help you feel engaged, but you need to graduate. You don’t need a 4.0 just pass.
I got offers for sde jobs at Amazon, Google, FB, Uber, twitter without a degree. In fact I’ve interviewed at every faang without a degree.
Interesting. All the job requirements I’ve seen for L4 level have it as a minimum requirement. I still think a degree is a valuable thing to have and worth getting for reasons beyond that.
You're right about school. It's not a place for smart people anymore. Don't write "dropout" on your resume, though. It has negative connotations. "Left early to join industry" sounds okay to me.
School is for nerds.
First off, you do need to explain in some way on your resume that you didn’t graduate. Otherwise you will not pass background checks. You still may fail some background checks for those that have overlooked it in the interview process. Second, you should graduate. Whether it should be this way or not, university is still seen as proof that you weee able to get through a massive undertaking and persevere. Eventually there will be some reckoning with underprivileged people not having the means to get the same education, but not yet and that’s not your case.
Typically I’ve seen this just written as the school name and attendance period. Most people just omit BS and a graduation date and tia pretty clear they only attended and did not finish a degree.
This. If you include the word “dropout,” I would personally dismiss your resume due to lack of judgment and poor business writing skills. You can be accurate and tactful at the same time. Unless you are applying for new grad job or the interviewer is an alumni or is otherwise interested in your school, questions about it aren’t likely to come up beyond the recruiter screening.
