Programmers are the smartest people in the world
I'm about to move states and go officially fully remote, but P&C folks have said that my current location (TX) and new location (CO) are the same tier, so my compensation won't change, but my new location absolutely has a higher cost of living. Does anyone have insight to how this works at Viasat? I know compensation overall is not super competitive in the market, but this really surprised me.
I moved from Carlsbad to Tempe and did not take a paycut. I was told I'm paid on performance, not location.
Location does matter - might not get a pay cut once you move but in future location will be part of com adjustment. I think it’s reasonable, no? Should we ask for Bay area salaries even though we don’t work there?
I think that's a tough sell. As most people are located in Carlsbad. I feel asking for SoCal salaries is reasonable, though.
Op, are you in Denver office?
No, I'm remote. So I understand part of it being that it was my choice to move. But they told me Texas and Colorado are the same compensation tier, which doesn't add up.
It’s because there are only three location tiers. 1 is San Jose and Boston, 2 is Carlsbad, 3 is everywhere else.
They usually don’t adjust it unless it’s significantly different. Did they ask you to move to CO? I don’t think they would increase it if it was your decision to move. If you’re moving to the Denver office then they might if your manager requested it. The best thing you can do is get another offer so you can get a match plus retention bonus and/or stock. Also check the Viasat job postings in CO for a similar position. CO requires salary to be on every JD so you can check if what you’re making is in the ballpark. Btw what’s your TC and YOE?
