TLDR; Apparently now they are doing some revisionism from other countries, not just the US and we got caught in the cross fire. The article’s point is pretty confusing because makes accusations but also… provides the data that debunks them? It’s a little bit all over the place and the are corrections made afterwards. Also the title shows different on Google search where is not asking the question, it’s answering with an accusation: “black erasure”. The author pointing out that we don’t have black representation in our national team and then it says that the black population is 0.3%. So there you go, matter solved, no more need to keep discussing, right?. But then the article turns into historical revisionism, accusing Argentina of “erasing” black people. For which it refers to many myths such a genocide during wars, and while points them out as myth, still mentions it, to cast doubt I suppose? There was also a justification post article: “My article provides a brief history of how Argentina went from roughly one third of its population categorized as black to less than one percent today. This is not a new conversation,” Edwards said. “It primarily debunks the various myths that have been used to explain black disappearance. We cannot accept that it is just European immigration that whitened the population in Argentina, as various countries throughout the Americas experienced massive European immigration too.” Interestingly, her own article contradicts this last claim and attributes it to migration in big part. When the African descendant population was 33%, this meant 200k. But between 1870 and 1913, 4.5 million people migrated to Argentina from Europe and the middle east. It’s funny that thesenumbers are mentioned in the article. Perhaps the author didn’t do the math? And realize that the percentage drops from 33% to ~4% after the migration? (Actually less because there was lot of mixing before that). So there you go, another question answered. In first place, slavery wasn’t big in Argentina to start with. For a comparison, Argentina brought 3% the number of slaves that Brazil did (the author points out how Brazil has black representation compared to us, well no shit). Children of slaves were freed 3 years before the country got its independence from Spain. Then, when the viceroy was kicked out, Argentinian born leaders were abolitionists and started to change the conditions until their final full release 37 years later. For example, they had the right to be paid and the right to choose their “patron”. Meaning that they were forced to work for someone but they could change who they worked for. Interestingly this seems to have been respected since the enslavers where the ones that were kicked out back to Spain, and it was the transition to freedom. Another thing is that there wasn’t segregation like in the US. Black people has been mixing with non black since the 18th century and it was legal (in the US was finally legalized in 1967 Jesus). Sure, many authorities promoted mixing of gauchos and former African slaves to “civilize” them, which is kind of fucked up. But the fact that it was legal and they mixed remains. Anyways, we are pretty mixed in Argentina. The “white” is not the same “white” that you see in Europe or even the US. Blonde and light eyes are rare. In my case, I’m light brown, dark hair and eyes. My sister is dark brown, 2 of my cousins are half native south american, all dark eyes in my family, etc etc. Funny thing is that I wasn’t aware of race until I came to the US, all my fellow Argentinians were just Argentinians in my eyes and I was Argentinian. It was when I came to the US that people several people eventually asked what the heck I was because they couldn’t figure me out and I started to ask my parents to tell me exactly all the mixes I have. And most of us are 3rd/4th generation, slavery was abolished a century prior our great grandparents migrated, so it’s not something that is in our radar, it’s not a taboo either, just something that we have read in school at some point and talked about it now and then. Damn that's a long post for after 12am. You must be drunk hard
WaPo is liberal trash. It's fake news. Stay based. Do what's best for your country.
WaPo, NYTimes and MSNBC are the democrat propaganda machines
Accuse a nation of mass genocide, eugenics and oppression is not something you would consider “wrong”?
Ah, the democracy reached its hands to Argentina as well. Now you know how it has been in most of the countries from Europe to far east Asia for many many years. Enjoy the show.
Classic American ignorant who can't understand that other countries might have a different history. Nothing new
US has a race based class system. It’s important to them. They are racialist in many subtle ways.
Don’t trip OP - the author of the article probably calls football soccer so what the fuck do they know anyway. There aren’t more black players because there are better non-black players to fill the roster. You want a spot, earn it. This is real life not college admissions.
Yeah, Soccer is still merit based, if we had a black player play like Messi or Maradona we would have tattoos of him like we do of them. And Maradona wasn’t white, which the author mentions, but sure, it seems that only black counts..
