I am F-1 student. I recently got all my rounds complete for Broadcom. Then I verbal confirmation of offer, relaocation talk and compensation details. Everything was decided. As soon as they got to know that I am a F-1 student. They rejected me. They said they were not going to sponsor h1-b and they are only hiring green card holders. I even explained that I dont need sponsorship but they still rejected. How true is this condition ? I am totally devastated by experience. Has anyone experienced it ? Any broadcom peeps, please guide. Thanks #tech #softwareengineer
At some point you need h1
Yes. I need at some point of time. But I was ready to leave this time. They were not aware I guess
Most employers expect continuity they can't work after ambiguous situation
A company isn’t supposed to discriminate based on legal status. If you can build a case, you could take formal action against them. However, in practice, I’ve definitely seen companies discriminate based on legal status. Edit: I believe this is wrong, see Cruise's correction in the comment
I know..feels very bad. Rejected me like I was nothing
They said. Its not in company policy right now
Are there any F1 or H1B full time employees working at Broadcom? Check out LinkedIn and if you find a single person like taht, you can challenge HR an this
Need to look that. Is it possible that after Vmware acquisition, they might have changed policy. Is it possible ?
Have you guys missed the 6+ other threads of Broadcom stopping Visa renewals?
You deserve better
Thanks man. But this experience hit more than a heart break
While applying for job, there's a clear question asking "would you need sponsorship now or in future?". What did you fill there?
I filled yes there..
Every company hires F1 with intent of filing h1b. 3 years limitation isn't gonna cut it for most of these big companies. But I don't know why suddenly stop sponsoring H1B? And more than that, I have seen almost every company specifically ask about "will you need a visa sponsorship?" during application. Didn't broadcom ask for that?
I said yes for that
Op, Fyi Broadcom doesn't sponsor fresh H1. They hire very, very rarely H1, and their total H1s are around 100 for the yr 2013, including renewals. With vmware acquisition, folks who got retained into Broadcom were also being let go on the basis of h1, i.e. they are not renewing h1 for those who already have their h1s and i140 thru vmware. In few cases, the perm was already completed, but they stopped i140 after acquisition. It is a pathetic situation to be in h1 in Broadcom.
What about f-1? F-1 OPT they can still work without sponsorship, right ?
F1 opt need sponsorship in the future so that’s a no go for companies that don’t sponsor
Hiring F1 candidates is a lot more work for the company. Multiple H1B lottery attempts and might also have to support them working from another country.
Which division did you interview with btw?
This is weird ! Why did they interview you if you needed sponsorship ?
HR person was not involved...he came in picture at they time of offer discussion.
