Since Big Auto (Stellantis/Ford/GM) gets major advantages for being Union-friendly, shouldn't tech workers/salaried employees at these companies also be unionizing ? What are the roadblocks to this ? Even the CEO of GM is in favor of Unions as per this recent interview: https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2022/12/08/gm-barra-uaw-contract-talks/69712610007/ Tech employees and Salaried employees would be stronger together, they would be able to negotiate remote work arrangements which can set precedents for other industries. They would be able to keep a check on wage gap difference between CEO pay and average employee pay. I don't think CEOs at Big Auto are doing anything to justify them getting paid as much for a day as much as salaried employees get paid in a year. The CEOs have made disastrous decisions such as investments in scams like Nikola, Lordstown Motors by GM or failed investments in Argo. They kept on denying the demise of the Engine and stalled move to EVs. GM famously killed EV1 and hid details on Global Warming. The unionization would prevent arbitrary policy U-turns such as new RTO at GM, considering the previous stance of Work Appropriately. A lot of good can come out of this. #techcareer #auto #autoanything #union Do let us know why you think are the roadblocks to unionization and how this can be brought about in the comments section:
I almost didn’t recognize you there, Chrysler/Dodge. I think GM already have enough coasters. Unionizing will encourage more people to coast.
Coasting is an accountability issue please don't conflate the two, this is more structural in terms of internal company power dynamics and fair pay/compensation. One can claim that the senior leadership at GM is also coasting at present. If the government is giving an upper hand to Big Auto in the markets over the competition then they would certainly promote salaried employee unions. Hope you can see this as a half glass full since it will help you as well, aren't you unhappy with the gaslighting and inappropriate rollout of RTO at GM ?
Well I’m not sure how much power the salaried union will have. The factory worker union wasn’t happy with salaried people working from home. If they can override salaried union on RTO then there’s no point in making one.
I cannot imagine what a union would improve at this point for my role as a salaried worker. High TC, six to seven weeks of paid vacation, concierge service and a ton of other benefits, cheap health care plan, great wlb, 401K matching, ESPP with two year look back, etc.. I cannot think of anything else I need. In fact, I don’t even make use of all existing benefits because I consider a lot of them over the top and rather do those things myself.
This is specific to Big Auto, the employees don't get the same benefits as you do, you have had the benefit of a secular bull run and trends in favor of GPUs. This will eventually revert to mean over time and at that time an employee in your position might not get the same benefits. Also the Executives at Big Auto are nowhere close to the caliber of Jensen. Look at this in terms of leaving a more equitable future for your children who will get to participate and operate in a more fairer structure than you.
I can see your point of view and it makes sense. However, it will be hard to make people get more engaged in the topic and push it through if the argument is to maintain /increase the work benefits and conditions for future generations. People on average are more focused on short term benefits and their own advantage than putting in the effort fur future generations of salaried employees.
I've been in a union while working during uni, I support unions. They are not for me.
Sure, after they advocate to lift all tariff and lift country cap. Then I convinced everyone to join. I just don't want support an organization that can discriminate just because people are from different countries.

Google has the alphabet workers union internally but I don’t know anything about it. Supposedly they helped negotiate a lot of better benefits for our contractors but I don’t think they’ve made any strides for salaried employees. If I had to guess I’d say less than 1% of FTEs are members
I thought those were mainly the bus drivers, cleaning and catering staff
I honestly don’t know. But I know multiple full time engineers that are members, they have a banner on their internal profile pictures. I chatted with one who said they got contractors better benefits and were working on things for tech; but maybe the intention is only advocating for nontech I’m not really sure
