SSE @ Wayfair with 192TC tech- Python Base 150k, 900RSU SE @ CarGurus with 203TC tech-Java & mysql Base 140k, 170k RSU Location: Boston, MA YOE:6 Current role: SE
I would suggest Cargurus. I know a few people who worked at Wayfair, company culture is messed up. Also, think about which technology you'd prefer to work on.
Not true man, i recently joined and i am not finding any such issues..HR , IT support, team members are helpful.
Wait till you make a mistake! :)
What does Cargurus pay for SSE? You might be right on the cusp of a SSE promo and they are already offering more money at a lower title so if you do really well you could potentially get a promo and even more money. I'd go with Cargurus.
Thanks! SSE will be an additional 25k or more. Base usually starts around 155-160k
Any inputs on WLB and culture at CarGurus?
I know some people there. From what I hear it’s a very good place with good culture and wlb I think they have some legacy code issues at this point (so does every successful company) but at least the legacy will be java vs legacy php for Wayfair. I’ll take a legacy java environment over php any day of the week.
My friend worked at both Wayfair and is currently at CG and he is very happy there. They have a good culture, he gets paid well, and doesn't work more than 40 hours a week. They're very flexible with when you work as well.
Negotiate for 160 base which is max for SSE. Try to get more RSUs for up to 230k TC. Python is good since you don't have to deal with legacy PHP. Do you know which team?
It’s one of their supply chain teams. This was the max they could go on the numbers.
Supply chain is very green field. But if Wayfair won't negotiate, just take the higher offer at CarGurus.
Car gurus has much better technical leadership and the bar is much higher for getting hired. Although I don't know how the python codebase is at Wayfair I can tell you both the Java and php codebases are a mess and you will have higher ranking engineers who are quite inept telling you how to do your job. Honestly I would go with CG even if the TC was substantially lower
With the history and legacy of the Python Platform team, the standard for python is better than PHP or Java. Wayfair is recognizing the issues and have stood up Platform teams to improve standards for PHP and Java. However, that doesn't insulate teams using python from everything else that is an issue with Wayfair's CI/CD pipeline, unit testing culture, among others. Wayfair, in terms of engineering, is in transition towards a better state. But I'd highly recommend potential new hires to talk to the hiring manager and skip level engineering leadership to ensure that they are synced on common goals.
is there any signing bonus with CarGurus?
Yes, 15k
Not much difference in tc. Which company is better on resume/career growth?
Wayfair seems more popular, but not sure if it’s for the right reasons!
What about the teams/manages u interviewed with. Any preference on that?
