Company Tiers

I’m going to be applying to SWE jobs in LA soon and wanted to get some thoughts on my rankings of most desirable companies. The main factors to consider are pay, wlb, and future opportunities. Top -Google -Snapchat -Netflix (probably don’t have the experience for this) -Facebook(do they have engineering in LA?) Solid -Amazon (Ring, Twitch included) -Hulu -Tinder -Riot -Microsoft -Honey -Dollar Shave Club -Disney(not sure on this one) -True[X] (also not sure) Good enough -Promising startups (any recommendations?) -SpaceX -TrueCar -Edmunds -Nordstrom Undesirable -Government contractors Also a few companies I’d like to hear more about if anyone has any insight on them are -Smarkets -Oscar -Honest Company -GoodRx -OpenTable If you have any companies to recommend or changes to the rankings I’d love to hear them.

Silicon beach area has the highest paying companies which includes the top tier you mention. The further east, the lower the pay. It should be easy to job hop and look for future opportunities if you work in silicon beach area.

Snapchat should be moved down a tier.

Is that due to predicted stock depreciation or wlb concerns?

Two Sigma dLcV53hbb Apr 30, 2018

Recent layoffs, lower comp for new offers due to stock, talent bailing, and AMZNs stupid vest schedule.

Netflix BlndrThngs Apr 30, 2018

Netflix doesn’t have much (if any) Engineering is LA

Edmunds is a car website...really? Dollar Shave Club is a company that does monthly shaving deals. TrueCar compares prices with cars in your area to use as leverage when buying used or new. Where do you live? Which rock?

Google Tech2long Apr 30, 2018

They’ll send you shavers and razors every month for a small subscription fee, contrast to buying them at a pharmacy or other store for more usually. I’m surprised you’ve never bought or owned a car. I find that weird, but then again I’m a car person. I can’t imagine life without a vehicle.

I would get the offer first and then compare vs ranking companies without any context. You need to consider total comp and what you'll be actually doing once you get there.

TrueCar has great pay, WLB, and career growth opportunity. DM me if you’re interested.

Dollar shave club, Disney, true[x], move down a tier.

Opternative lenkhj May 5, 2018

why do you say that about true[x]?

Amazon gldnhndcfs May 7, 2018

Nordstrom has epic WLB and pays competitive with Microsoft and amazon if you have competing offers.

TrueCar is a negative. They are busy moving out of legacy code into a ruby based stack. You're skills will stale. Promotions are based on who you know. Highly political. WFH policy is changing to demand more office time.

Truecar is a lot better now that the replatforming efforts are complete.
