I am from India. We are contemplating to try the path of EB5. It involves investing $800k. Our net worth is not that much too, it is just around that amount. Do other people from FAANG explore that option. If they have that kind of money. Is it worth exploring that option #workvisa TC - 275k
Door ke dhol suhane. With over $800k you can open your own business in India, have a healthy lifestyle, more people friends and family to visit, do frequent international trips with interests or returns from your business. Edit- but if you really want to do it and think after getting EB5 you’d achieve more in life, be more happier. Then that should be your choice
Good point
800K per person, so $1.6M for you and your wife or is it for everyone in the application ? One of my friends got EB-5 GC when he was single, he was pretty loaded so didn’t think twice about it.
Are you already in the US or just fantasizing about the American life from India? Depends on the investment but I wouldn't just sink 800K into a single business just to live in the US.
I am already in the US
It’s a very high risk investment and no guarantee of return of capital, forget actual returns over 7 yrs. In 7yrs index funds typically double your money. So it’s basically a 1.6M cost for a green card and not assured at that. It’s ok if this was 50% or less of your net worth since it’s getting you freedom and peace of mind. But currently you risk wiping yourself out completely and not getting the green card as well. Focus on increasing your net worth and then maybe go for it once you have 1.5-2M. At the end of the day wealth is your true freedom, don’t gamble it away.
Wdym - not getting green card as well. I thought you get conditional green card with the visa
It’s not guaranteed, all the conditions need to be met. If something like Covid happens and your project that you invested in gets abandoned/doesn’t employ 10 citizens you can lose/never get the green card. And you lose the money. The whole point is that it’s high risk- both your capital and the green card. Anyway I would say if your NW is 800k ish it’s a very bad idea to do this, even if you get the green card you lose liquidity/money for 7 yrs. Get atleast a 500k buffer if you are a couple and then do it if you really feel it’s worth it.
Why not check out the golden visa in dubai . . Lower capital required and dubai life is similar if not better to US lifestyle . . Also you get to travel to India on a whim if thats something valuable to you . .
Investment in a regional centre has to be “at risk” meaning you cannot have any kind of guarantee clause related to return of investment. Though most regional centers operate on their credibility which needs to be verified
Is it guaranteed that you get GC if you out this amount of money?? And how long it takes
Read the thread Intel...there are no guarantees and your capital is at risk but everyone has different financial situation and risk appetite, so what may work for one person may not work for another. Read up and get informed.
I did it when it was $500k. Was well worth it. Got very low returns but since they invest it conservatively you can’t expect same returns as stock market. Main goal is green card than making a lot of money. Got my investment back with the lower returns which covered my borrowing costs. So my only expense was lawyer fees and filing fees which were about $50k back then. for me $50k for green card has been worth it. For others it may not be worth $50k
how much time did it take to get conditional gc ?
Do it, totally worth it if you can afford it. Its worth for your peace of mind
I did couple of months back.
where did you invest?
