Snap CEO Evan Kerr claims TikTok is curb stomping Snap due to their ability to spend "billions and billions"

"What nobody had anticipated in the United States was the level of investment that ByteDance made into the U.S. market, and of course in Europe, because it was just something that was unimaginable — no startup could afford to invest billions and billions and billions of dollars in user acquisition like that around the world,” “It was a totally different strategy than any technology company had expected before because it wasn't an innovation-led strategy; it was really about subsidizing large-scale user acquisition.”

Ban TikTok, I want my meta calls to print.

Roku TayT64 Sep 11, 2022

Trump was close to it. While Trump kisses Russia’s ring, Biden kisses China’s.

A lot of people will go back to SMS before they go back to Facebook.

Sure. TC & YOE or GTFO!

Microsoft 赵立坚 Sep 11, 2022

This is the Chinese strategy. They throw money at problems and/or they will do literally anything to undercut the competition

Amazon rimari Sep 11, 2022

The money no doubt came from the CCP

He’ll blame anything for his company’s poor performance and lack of innovation. They tried to roll out good video content on snap, it’s been years, and they are still stuck with all the shitty “so satisfying” and “5 minute crafts” videos. Did tiktok run any ads for user acquisition? I have not seen any. I did get lots of content shared with me from friends.

Amazon doomfist Sep 11, 2022

YouTube is loaded with ads for TikTok. Seems like 1 in every 4 ads I see on there is for TikTok.

Netflix islamabad Sep 11, 2022

Is snap’s problem really user acquisition? Who hasn’t installed snap at one point? People gave them a fair shot.

Amazon rimari Sep 11, 2022

China engaging in anti competitive trade and market manipulation? 🙄

Walmart LqwI2010 Sep 11, 2022

Snap is toxic waste.

Roku TayT64 Sep 11, 2022

TikTok isn’t?

ByteDance meCn37 Sep 11, 2022

Yeah, maybe I’m biased, but getting people on the platform is one thing (everyone does user acquisition, hell, I started seeing FB ads again), getting people to stay and use an app over time is another. Evan should take a look at time on app stats for a reality check.

This is BS unless we will ignore all the prior years and experience of Tiktok on the 800 million Chinese internet users which has evidently prepared it to roll out globally faster than normal start-ups. This is why Chinese corps will always be ahead. They are not desperate for global markets because they have enough user base at home to serve and train first

An unfair advantage we should eliminate. They don't allow other non Chinese social media on their turf and we should do the same to them

You do realize that US companies need Chinese markets due to population while Chinese companies do not need US market. Social media is mainly a game of numbers and the Chinese have them. They will always excel in this regard. US competition dominance is usually in form of collaboration with allied countries but that is increasingly becoming more difficult due to divided Europe. It will be very difficult for the US to convince the whole of EU to ban an app such as TikTok and allowed FB while EU itself is punishing these same companies.
