Hulu/Disney Integration
Am I the only one who is baffled at why Disney acquired Hulu in the first place if they didn’t intend to retain talent? Hulu didn’t build itself…the people built it. And it’s the people who will continue to innovate and push forward in an extremely competitive market. But not if they leave for the competition in droves. Things are even worse for those who stay behind with low morale, and the expectation that they will do the work of people who leave. Add to that a truly incompetent, old school HR that takes months to fill a basic role. The issues are same at Disney+…people are leaving without even having jobs lined up because of low morale, low pay, being treated like a number etc. At this point, I’m wondering why Disney got into streaming if they are unwilling to pay and build the company culture required to acquire/retain top talent.
Not really. They just announced that we’re moving to their benefits today and what that will entail, so everyone is livid and pledging to leave. We’ve lost so many people already and Disney’s mishandling is leading to even more attrition, so it truly begs the question…what tf was the point of this acquisition? They should’ve just let NBCU have Hulu. Instead, they’re driving all the talent out, ignoring it over D+ and then launching a separate entertainment brand internationally to avoid paying NBC their fair share, devaluing Hulu. $20 bucks says in 3 years they’ll call it a failed project and leadership will blame everything but themselves. 🙄

How are the new benefits worse?
Outsider perspective, but the core of the strategy is around IP generation/consolidation right? Maybe they don't see the platform as a differentiator.
So they paid all that money for the streaming right to Handmaids Tale? 🧐

🐀 is the worst. They are purely banking on the fact that they have a rich catalog and cashcow in name of marvel. Know folks who have been working at D for a few years and their experiences are all unanimously bad (work culture, satisfaction wise)

It’s a revolving door. The streaming business has been reorganized 3 times in the last 2 years. I think strategy is being driven by people who haven’t operated in this space before.
They bought Hulu for the platform and nothing else. Hulu will be dissolved by 2025 when the deal with NBC is done.

Wild uniformed hot takes: Maybe they want the attrition? Maybe they think it looks better than laying off people for redundancy.🤷♂️ I thought they were going to use Hulu for content that might not be seen as on-brand. But idk, maybe they will shudder it and absorb the share of market.
It's not because of that. Disney (I'm including Hulu and Disney Streaming in there as well) Leadership is really just clueless. I think Bob C and Bob I just have handlers who keep good information away from them and insulated from what's really happening. It's chaos plain and simple. Employees reporting into managers who work for other companies with no strategy in place for unified identity. Separate HR systems so good luck during annual reviews if they even bother having them. Disney is taking away most perks, reducing bonus % for most employees and yeah, the health benefits at Disney always sucked.
Didn’t the Hulu team come over in the Fox acquisition?
Correct. Disney gained control of Hulu via the Fox acquisition. Part of the deal was that Disney took Fox’s share and became majority holder. IIRC Comcast eventually sold its portion to Disney.
Ownership-wise that's correct. Actual merging of Hulu to Disney really started beginning end of 2020 (for tech org at least).
