I see here lots of people saying culture at uber really sucks. Is it team to team dependent or every team is right bad?
Uber culture isn't bad. It's some salty low performers who use blind as a sounding board to vent. Same old story...
Uber culture is by far worst in the Valley. Stay away. There are relatively better groups but you never know which group will you end up with or there is no guarantee that those groups will not be merged into some other org that are worse.
They churn employees very fast. So it's only natural. If you know some people there or the team you are going into and Think you can handle that kind of environment, I think it's a great opportunity.
What's the opportunity? Nowadays we give shitty offers. We force everyone to take a big pay cut. SR's given $400k RSUs, which is not even liquid.
Growing as fast as Uber has necessarily creates some cultural and political problems. And it has hired, and fired, several mediocre, get-rich-quick types. Nonetheless, Uber still has the strongest talent roster and brightest long-term prospects of any private company right now.
That's the difference between G/FB and Uber. G/FB had steeper growth curves but they were able to hire right people and managed to maintain cultural values, minimized politics. Growth is not an excuse for toxic culture and politics. There were companies been there and done that. Uber never had a strong talent roster, probably never will. Any average team at Google has more engineering depth than entire Uber engineering org combined. Tell me about a single IC that's known and respected by industry works at Uber?
Wow
Uber is fooling everyone - it's the most unethical company I worked for ever - regardless of what people say , I will regret Joining forever - sadly it left a huge hole and I am now struggling to get back (have some other options and I will be exiting soon)
The only potential win from Uber arise from options and only if you joined prior to 2014 and purchased your options early on. That options ofsets the shit we ate all these years. I don't see any incentives for the guys joined now. Uber may double in value. Yes, but FB may as well and its liquid money you can spent today.
Honestly speaking culture is shit. It looks good on resume tho. I never worked in fb or google, so I can't compare their tech stack to Uber. Uber's is very similar to previous startups that I worked. My previous experience at postmates was very relevant and translated well here.
How is Uber culture vs Postmates? Any regrets about switching?
Postmates is much smaller, has a good vibe and a young team, better culture, much less politics and much less growth too. There are some immaturity and stupidity but not malignant. People are not arrogant and they admit their mistakes quickly, including execs. Only 30 people in eng, tech stack is simpler and runs over aws. Very young team, nobody from big companies. Uber is the quite opposite, you feel the politics and bad vibe at door. Some people have just bad character. I wanted to hedge my bets and wanted to work in a larger org, Uber had my only choice. I do not regret but I won't stay here long either.
I like it a lot at uber. took 9 months to feel that way though
Uber is going through a defining moment. It'll either get its shit together and fall apart. Next 6 months will be crucial. Expect some leadership changes. I would stay on sidelines and watch, then revisit in summer.
