So is it officially over now ? How many job cuts so far ? Poor ex Nokia people....
What the heck is Andromeda supposed to be?
This isn't a surprise internally. OSG hasn't even been producing official phone builds in many months, and the ones that were produced were based on the code of two releases ago. I'd imagine that anyone losing a job over this already lost it a long time ago, and any lingering resources dedicated to "phone" projects have been transitioning to either Andromeda or Onecore work for a long time coming.
What is weird? Blaming it on lack of apps! As if the iPhone was full of apps in v1. Microsoft had Windows Mobile 10 years ago. APIs similar to Win32, and many apps (by the standards at that time). But why stick to something convenient to developers, when someone can be promoted creating WinRT? Why wouldn't developers adopt a platform without clear direction, poor tools, and ever-changing APIs?
They laid off the last remaining few Nokia teams last year itself after writing off the $8bn deal from their books. And what ever their hardware plans are, will be handled by their own existing MSFT teams. Most of the Nokians in Finland are now with HMD global which is making Nokia branded android smartphones. To answer OP, it was around 20000 layoffs all together in this MSFT mess. I still hope there is room for WP in the market if they are able to improve/adapt features to their OS.
