It’s a scam. Most people won’t take enough vacation. Unlimited vacation means no payout for vacation for any situation in which you would’ve been paid out had you of had vacation time accrued. It also means instead of “taking” your vacation time off... it will be more like asking permission to take time off. It’s all at your managers discretion. So prepare for guilt trips, and “oh we were preparing to launch x feature, now is not a good time”

It’s great. The only way to take 5-6 weeks paid PTO in the US.
It depends on the company. I’ve worked places where it means “no vacation”, and I’ve worked at places where it means “at least as much as you otherwise would’ve gotten at likely other employers”.
Yup, it depends on the company and the team as well. My current company has unlimited PTO. I almost took 8-10 weeks in 2019 and I also do 1 day wfh every week. It also depends on the team culture. Every one in my team take 1 week off every 2 months. Spring break, Memorial Day, summer break, fall break, thanks giving, holiday time it’s like last 3 weeks of Dec no one shows up. On top of this, if you are traveling abroad, people take 4-6 weeks in which they work remotely for half of that time. As long as you deliver, no one should question. At least that’s what I believe in.
Where do you work?👀

Like one of the user said, it is generally a scam, so they don't have to pay you out. I worked at a company where everyone below manager had unlimited PTO, but manager and above had at least 15 days PTO. Go figure!
It’s a benefit in today’s SWE labor market but a scam if that trend changes. Guaranteed time off is a benefit that’s there to protect employees. Right now we don’t need the protection but if we ever do, unlimited won’t give it to you.
Every company is different. I wfh and have unlimited PTO and can take as much as I want. I'm not the kind that would want to take 6 months off, but took over 1 month in 2019 and could have easily taken another without anyone batting an eye.
It depends on the company and team. My last job had unlimited PTO, and other coworkers would shame/side-eye those who actually took off. I’ve seen some jobs that have unlimited PTO, but they enforce people to take a minimum of 20-25 days off.
Studies have shown that people actually take more time off when it's a traditional PTO model, likely due to a psychological "use-it-or-lose-it" mentality, as well more respect from the org when you're on one. Be wary of Unlimited PTO, as it ironically means you're probably going to get less PTO.
I’ve only had one role in salesforce, but my experience is not a good one. Unlimited PTO is a one way ticket to guilt trip city. Even requesting a day off is a met with dissatisfaction or disgust. After getting back from vacation I was met with passive aggressive behavior and the largest work load I had ever received until then. It’s really disappointed and ruins morale.
You keep taking your unlimited PTO and you will figure it out soon enough ...
