Site Optimization

I typically don’t do side jobs, but my wife’s friend asked to help their family with their website. They have an e-commerce family business - afaik, pretty successful - the checkout page load time is 7-8 seconds. They want me to optimize it. It’s a Wordpress website. I have no idea what the typical rates are for this type of work. I suggested the following terms: $500 for the diagnostic. $500 for each reduced second. What do you think? PS: on top of his business, the guy owns multiple properties and drives Lamborghini Urus. TC: 270k 🥹 #gig #sidejob

Bruh just hire someone to do it, don’t mix business with friends

Amazon po9z1o OP Sep 11, 2023

They are not my friends. His wife is a friend of my wife. “Friend” is prob too much of a word here. His wife is a good client of my wife (nothing crazy there). They sometimes go for a coffee together, maybe meet with other girls at some local cafe. That’s about it. Her husband is mainly driving the business. Neither me nor my wife has ever seen him in person.

But like they are your family, why ask for money?

Google goggley Sep 11, 2023

To establish a non-family work relationship which sets healthy boundaries

They are not my family. They have a family business. My wife knows his wife. I have no idea who they are.

Number of hours of work * 270k * adjust to RSU price on delivery day/ (250*8) If it's only you working .

Microsoft stragggle Sep 11, 2023

Cost per reduced second. Lmao. Why not per hour?

Amazon po9z1o OP Sep 11, 2023

I don’t wanna charge per hour, because it may end up being installing a JS/CSS minimizer and done. Like 15 minutes of work. What do I charge, $200? If I actually save them 5 seconds on load time, it’s $2500. Since this is the Checkout page (high value), they have a huge bounce rate. So I thought a per second $ is a fair deal. They only pay for the actual delivered result in this case.

Google goggley Sep 11, 2023

I would charge for the diagnostic (whatever is worth it to you) but hold off on the followup rate until you actually figure out what you can do to improve it.

Amazon Hashykol88 Sep 11, 2023

Do it like the guy who checked my appliance repair . 500$ for diagnostic - then to fix it you will give them options. Keep it highly professional and be discreet. Mixing Friends and family with business and money always turns sour, so handle it very professionally.

"I am unfortunately unable to do this task as it's beyond the scope of my capabilities (or experience), you can find someone inexpensive on Fiverr to do that instead" Avoid drama, blame your skills if necessary but you don't want to be in business of justifying your rates to someone. Let them go for free market and pay through nose. Charity is when people complain the most, never do charity rates or free stuff

Amazon po9z1o OP Sep 11, 2023

Huh? What do you mean? The guy was begging me to help him because no other company can fix the performance. Some local shop offered him to build a new website from scratch. He doesn’t want to.

Amazon po9z1o OP Sep 11, 2023

Also, why did you mention free stuff / charity? I offered $500 for the diagnostic and $500 for each reduced second 😂

Amazon po9z1o OP Sep 11, 2023

Forgot to mention, on top of his business, the guy owns multiple properties and drives Lamborghini Urus. 🥲

Microsoft isensei Sep 11, 2023

yeah you mentioned 🤣. I wish someone driving a urus would "beg" me to help him haha. I'd do it for free if he helps me contribute something to his business for a fair share in the future

Amazon po9z1o OP Sep 11, 2023

(I added the PS later) Nah, he is not of much help for me. The business the guy’s in is similar to selling dietary supplements. And no way I’m doing it for free. Not when working for Amazon. Otherwise that’s what I’d probably do.

Microsoft isensei Sep 11, 2023

Charge the $500 and tell them you are actually not sure if that's the correct rate. It's just what you see for now. Reasons? You are not trying to make a lot of money from them, just doing him a favor since you are a techie. It might just be a one-time thing. Don't overthink it. Now if after that he wants more, come back to us or go on Fiver and after diagnosing, do as if you were the owner and wanted to hire a freelancer, see what rates they charge and pick yours accordingly. Good luck! That is a great opportunity to help and see how others are making their money

Amazon po9z1o OP Sep 11, 2023

Well, I already suggested the terms. 😬 $500 for diagnostic,$500 for each optimized second. Waiting for his decision.
