Looking for a new four-season place to call home

Hello Blind Community! Here's my situation: live in SoCal, and I absolutely hate it here. It's been about 5 years since we moved from NYC and I still can't get used to the constant sunshine, not knowing which season it is right now etc. etc. Everyone is different and I'm the type of person who truly enjoys some gray weather, rain, snow etc. And I realized that I really want to live in a four-season location again. What would be good options to consider? My search criteria are: * Has to have four-season (doesn't have to be Alaskan winter but I'd appreciate White Christmas) * Nature: rivers, possibly some hills/mountains, LOTS of trees, please! the ocean isn't necessarily a requirement * House/townhouse: under 1 M probably * 30-60 min drive away from the airport * Ideally, close to faang offices but it's not necessarily a requirement YOE: 14 TC: 470

Seattle or its neighborhood.

What parts of Seattle would you recommend? Btw, does Seattle ever gets snow? (not talking Mt. Rainer or Baker)

Meta litoKun Aug 30, 2022

We get like a week of snow A small amount but it still paralyzes everything for a few days. I wouldn't recommend Seattle proper, but somewhere on the east side. It really depends, I prefer boring, clean and safe than fun, dirty and full of homeless

Seattle is the place for you

But what about the sunshine?

EPAM Systems NTBS21 OP Aug 30, 2022

Which areas in Seattle would you recommend?

Cisco 8JtPtARQBn Aug 30, 2022

Sounds like you want to live in Colorado, Sante FE, NM, or some place like Flagstaff, AZ. Alternatively North Carolina would get you 4 seasons and East Coast timezone.

EPAM Systems NTBS21 OP Aug 30, 2022

Colorado sounds great but I honestly don't remember if it has a lot of trees and overall greenery. I think it's more of a high desert type of climate? (I'm talking about Boulder area) How are Santa Fe and Flagstaff in the summer? Crazy hot?

No white christmas in NC though.

It sounds like you want the Denver Metro area or Boulder if you want to be closer to FAANG+ offices.

Denver has got no trees

Pittsburgh, PA

EPAM Systems NTBS21 OP Aug 30, 2022

That's an interesting response! I've been thinking about Pittsburgh. A very good friend of mine used to live there back in the days when you could buy a very good house for 200K. And I definitely liked the scenery, waterfalls, lakes and even the hills lol. But I have no idea how is the housing market over there right now, need to research

LinkedIn ifkifgj Aug 30, 2022

It went up, but you can still get something very nice under 1M

Missoula

Somehow I've never been to Montana but judging by the name of the state, I've always assumed I'd love it there:) How is it in terms of its proximity to the airports and faang offices?

I love this post. I just wish some more people would pack up. 🤔😃

EPAM Systems NTBS21 OP Aug 30, 2022

Haha too late, we've already contributed to real estate market heat here also:)

I think you’re gonna get a lot of replies for Portland and Seattle. I’ve lived in both and they check most boxes including housing budget if you live far enough away from downtown. I recently bought land Spokane (70 acres) in anticipation of the coming apocalypse to start my compound and I’m really enjoying the area. It’s a bit more MAGA than I’d prefer, but if you live west of downtown most people from Idaho won’t bother you with their biblical takes on healthcare. WA is tax free, has all four seasons, and the best nature in the country IMO. Not a lot of FAANG offices but I consider that a plus. Good luck!

EPAM Systems NTBS21 OP Aug 30, 2022

Thank you! Our extended family lives in Oregon so I'm pretty familiar w/PNW, but not very familiar with WA and eastern WA. How are you liking Spokane? Does it get any snow in the winter?

Snowflake !snowblind Aug 30, 2022

Atlanta is the only major city you'll get substantial canopy cover inside the city limits, go northern suburbs for the snow. Direct flights to almost anywhere in the world, plenty of FAANGs here (new massive MS campus coming). And for housing, 1M won't get you a mansion, but it'll put you in a great house intown. Should also get you a very nice townhome on the beltline.

EPAM Systems NTBS21 OP Aug 30, 2022

Thank you! How are winters in Atlanta? Does it get any snow? Or is it considered more of an extreme/rare event?

Ford Motor Company dsdjn Aug 30, 2022

No, it’s a rare event.
