WageWorks Commuter Card

I moved from NYC to Florida, and I have over $600 in my WageWorks commuter card. I was recently told that they wont refund my money (even if they take the taxes) I have a car in Florida, I have no need for public transportstion, although Im still with my employer, I wont be traveling back to NYC or any other city for that matter. Im going on maternity leave in two months. I cant even use it for parking, or UberPool in Tampa. Has anyone been in this predicament? Its basically stealing. This money is from my paycheck, not given to me by work. They even said if I leave my firm, and I dont use the funds in 90 days, they keep it. How insane is that? Does anyone have a solution to this? Thanks!

Had the same issue. Called wageworks customer service, got a hold removed from my card so I can use it on parking/subway card in new city (buy something that won’t expire while you’re on maternity leave). Unless otherwise stated, you should be able to use it on any transportation-related expenses in your new city (within 90 days). They accidentally and incorrectly applied a merchant-hold on mine...may be the same situation for you.

It’s not stealing. You consented to the IRS rules when you enrolled in the program. You directed that the money be put in a tax-free account with conditions, not your employer.

It works with amtrak if you ever feel like taking a train somewhere. If you have old receipts for transport that weren’t charged on the card, you can call them and get them to reimburse it to you as well.
