I am trying to switch from support to development profile or where there is more growth opportunity and my experience is around everything like Web application support, Reporting, Big Data/Big Data Technologies & also database(PlSQL/RDBMS) .I did masters in computer science, but currently working in support. What is a good option for me . Which profile has more growth opportunities and aligns with my experience. Also I am trying not to start from the beginning/Jr position as I already have around 8+ year of industry experience.
Your YOE in support won't count as experience for any engineering role. Drop that expectation and take any job that allows you to gain dev experience.
There’s definitely some value in that experience, knowing what goes into supporting a product/service is useful for an engineer. But I agree, it’s definitely not 1:1. I’d treat it as ~0.5-1 YOE (which is still entry level for most engineering roles)
0.5:1 is what my company uses for role changes. SSE I to SWE I is considered a double/triple promotion. So if you are an SSE IV and transition to SWE you would drop 2 title levels and end up at SWE II. The main value of an SSE role in a SWE transition comes from code and UI debugging experience.
Can you mention your current job title?
Go for Sales
Go with development profile. In support you will learn for some time after that ppl will learn from you. In dev you will always learn new things and even more interesting thing. If no option then after an year definitely change the project.
They won’t count support as experience so you might have to take a entry level role.
If you play the interview and summary of your resume right, I think you can get it to count quite a bit. You have been on the "receiving end" of the results when other people throw code over the wall to support. You should be able to articulate a very mature view for how that impacts your views on unit testing, maintainability, and observability
Try for a mid level developer role with a company which prioritizes wlb so that you will have enough room to deliver. First 6 months would be challenging but you can do it. I moved to development after 12 yrs in support. It wasnt easy but can be done.
How come MSCS yet only got job as support? (Unless you just recently got it)
There are plenty of reasons why that could happen. I have a MS in CS and worked as a software engineer for several years. At one point I was quite unhappy with my job and took a role as a support engineer for a company that I'd heard was a destination to aim for, hoping to get a foot in the door to eventually get a SWE role there. Turned out that never materialized and while I was there I found out that the company was nowhere near as aspirational a place to be as I thought. I moved on and now I'm back to SWE.
Square are you referring to the TSE role at big G?
The path of least resistance
The path of least pressure gradient
If u go for development, don’t expect ur first position to be something u like. This would probably be a transition position. And yes, just go for ur passion.
How come you did CS and end up in support like I did once?
How did you move out Amazon?
Who said I did
