People have been dunking on Google a lot lately due to their lackluster AI progress and deteriorating company culture, but I’ve been thinking about the absurd amount of surplus value Google has generated for the world and I think almost no other company (not just tech) comes close. I mean think about it, Google search, Gmail, google maps, google docs, google drive, google calendar, chrome, YouTube, Android, google forms, codesign, google meet, all the random little tools in search and other products (the calculator with unit conversion in the search bar is my favorite). Many of these products people use on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour basis. Many biz/orgs/people will cease to function without them. Most of these are tools that simply make the world function better, with YouTube being arguably the least bad social media. And it’s all basically FREE. If I had to pay, say, $70 a month to use all of Google’s free services I would happily do it 10 times over. I mean they’re certainly doing more than ISPs who created a monopoly by laying down some cables decades ago. It never ceases to amaze me that despite everything being free, Google is one the highest revenue companies in the world, behind only Amazon and Apple in tech. Amazon is arguably the only other company that comes close for how much economic value they create. And for Apple, aside from the iPhone being revolutionary, most just sits on its brand value and absurd margins. Like, Google’s entire business model is basically: our ads/search business is so absurdly profitable and fundamental to the digital economy that by simply creating products to make the internet more useful, their costs can be justified. Not to mention, ads, in moderation, is an invaluable service to the world as well. Compared to other platforms, Google ads are usually not that annoying. The fact that their ads generate so much revenue means the economic lubrication provided by their ads is possibly even more valuable than all the other services they provide.
LOL “Apple, aside from the iPhone being revolutionary, most just sits on its brand value and absurd margins.”
Couldn't agree more.
Google of the past that built all these things to serve users - net good. Google of today that wants to exploit these properties to extract shareholder value while simultaneously destroying the services and affecting employees? This is like IBM.
I think in 5-10 years Google will have serious competition in search. Declining search quality will lead people to seek greener pastures.
Just because the stock is up? 😂
It's not just advertising, google is selling your data. If you understood what people are doing with that data you might feel differently. Sure they make compelling and free stuff too.
You're right man! Been ~3 years for me and every time I take the Gbus to Mountain View I get butterflies in my stomach. IMO nobody comes close and everyone who gives us heat would gladly take a job with us in a heartbeat.
Are you sure people are really dunking on google? GOOG is at ATH.
