AE —> Sales Ops?

Hey folks, I’m thinking about making a career transition to go from AE to Ops. I’ve always thought that most CSO or Head of Sales lack the proper data analytics skills and they are just really good rep or good at training. I saw Open AI new head of sales came from strictly ops back ground. I’m thinking that down the line, sales data analytics would be a more important skill than pure sales for sales leadership. Thoughts? TC: 200K YoE: 1 in SDR 2 in AE

It's worth a shot if you think you're good at it. But from the company's POV you're transitioning from a profit centre to a cost centre and that affects your TC.

100%, the paycut is crazy to go from AE to entry level sales Ops or even senior role lol I doubt even if a director level Ops would make up the pay gap

Your reasoning sounds good - but I could not do it. I would think you go from one sales manager breathing down your neck to X reps and X sales managers riding you to get stuff done. I see our sales ops folks and think man, how do they deal with it. It may be fine until EOQ but seems stressful from outside.

Damn is it that bad 😂😂 “one sales manager breathing down your neck to X sales managers riding you” has me dead LOL

If you can’t handle the pressure of sales, go for it. But you’re definitely going to a back office role

I think the OpenAI thing is an exception, better to just work your way up the sales management chain. Like Databricks said, huge TC cut, back office role
