I am a QA Engineer. I was working in a WITCH company in 2018 and more than 4x ed my salary with my latest job hop. I wanted to give back to the community as there is very less guidance as far as QA position is concerned. This is the template for most of the companies. 1. Coding: Most of the companies expect the candidates to be comfortable with coding. I went through LC75 list and learned to solve most of the medium problems related to Arrays, Strings, Linked List and Tree. Solved around 200 LCs. Except for leadership positions, it is almost guaranteed to expect coding questions. 2. Test plan / Test strategy: This is make or break for any QA interview. I highly recommend going through this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P87IIE5ds_w&t=1404s 3. Behavioral: When I worked at Amazon, i learned a lot by interviewing others. I prepared answers based on what I observed, what I would expect being an interviewer. I have gathered minimum of 3 examples for each of Failure, Success project, Underperforming team mate, Conflict, Feedback that I received from my manager and worked on delivering this. 4. System Design: I was asked application system design only at Roblox. All other companies, it was more about automation framework. Again, dont try to jump onto answering without clarifying the requirements. 5. Past project: In couple of companies, I had a technical discussion on past project round. The interview was for an hour. I had to provide a technical walkthrough of 1 project that I worked on. This is mostly for high paying companies. I got offers from 4 companies and declines to interview for more than 5 companies. Got offers from Apple, Gemini and a tier-2 company (Similar to Chime, Stripe etc.,) and joining the same. New TC: 375K (First Year) Yoe: 11 (3 in India and 8 in US), Bachelors Degree. Note: The role is for QA Lead / Manager position. (I have the option to work on automation if I want). #engineering #software #qa #sdet
That’s something I am hands on and felt comfortable
Thanks for doing this Op.. Can you list the companies that are still hiring for QA roles.. it looks like QA roles are slowly disappearing.
Not true
believe QA is here to stay. Especially with Hardware / IoT QA is essential. However, when it comes to manual qa, there are not many companies. They expect QA to be able to code. I am QA and havent committed any CR in the past 2 years. But in order to be employable, you need to LC. thats the harsh reality. After say 10 years, the focus is more on how you demonstrate your cross functional working skills, how you deliver a big project etc. Happy to answer if you have any Q's
How would you describe the difference between QAE and SDET? Why do you call yourself a QAE but not SDET? Is it true that QAE/SDET got paid 10% less than SDE at the same level?
I am a QAE/QA lead because my responsibility is to ship the product. I employ both manual and automation to achieve this. Pay parity depends on the company. Except Amazon, SDE >SDET >QAE. Amazon is very bad place to be a QA . L5 SDET makes around 400k where as L6 QAE makes 200K.
What's the difference in responsibilities between an Amazon SDET vs QAE?
Very good info for QA engineers out there. Can you share Amazon, apple, Gemini TC offered ?
Amazon -175K, Apple -200, Gemini-170K. I haven’t negotiated with Gemini at all as I didn’t like the interview panel. I was excited about apple but was downleveled due to some non sense reason.
Which company are you joining ?
Can you share Apple and other offers Level ?
Apple -ICT3. Gemini- it was senior position. The other company -L6. Levels.fyi shows it’s equivalent to Amazon L6.
How was your interview with Apple? What level were you interviewing at Apple?
I interviewed at ICT4 and offered ICT3. I spot rejected the offer as it’s less than what I am making. It was focused on the domain AR/VR. All the questions were related to how would I test AR stuff, coming up with test plan for AR app…
Could you share the tc offered from Apple?
How was your interview experience at Gemini? What level of technical questions did you get?
Gemini was least technical. I had a take home assignment plus 4 rounds of on-site spread over 2 days. I felt it was less interactive as interviewers were focused on taking notes rather than anything. 1 round - basic selenium, SQL and Java LC. 2 rounds of leadership principles and 1 round of test planning
@op- can you give example of what question was asked for framework design?
Automation design for basic pixel camera and another related to how automation is done in my current project. If you know what you’re doing at current job, it’s a good head start. Build from there on.
Are there any good resources for automation design prep questions? Or any other good YouTube resources you would recommend for QAE concepts?
Most of the QA concepts I take notes from my working experience
