Asking on behalf of my friend, who's not on blind. He was automation engineer in Intuit and will soon get layedoff as the company had restructuring and they don't want this role anymore. He has 10 yoe and depressed that he can't be a developer at this stage. Even if he tries to be, he would be compared with existing dev colleagues and eventually will always be in bottom of the bell curve. What do you think about this role is going to deplete soon? Which other companies encourages this role? Note: Even LinkedIn, FB, Altisource doesn't have these roles anymore
There are so many companies in Bay Area who recruit QA. Coming to treatment it totally depends on the manger or whoever who owns the entire tech team.
I don’t see “he can’t be a developer at this stage” as having any truth. I have repeatedly seen people switch from SDET to SWE and be very successful. He should leetcode like crazy and then interview for dev roles. He might be able to find another SDET role for now but he still has 30 years of a career ahead of him. It’s better to avoid digging himself further into a hole.
That didn’t make sense
Lab126 still hires some SDET’s in the Bay Area, depending on the org the standard can vary.
I feel bad for your friend, but honestly being a QA/SDET sucks. Nobody respects you and you’re blamed for everything
That could not be his choice in his career but now he is at this stage, what he can do? That's the question :-)
He could look into QA management but I think his chances as a dev are done. Sorry
