United Airlines WLB

Does anyone know about the Software engineering work culture in the United Airlines software team?

Remote work is never allowed for airline jobs. They are very strict with it and Wlb depends on the team you are in. But mostly it’s a high pressure environment.

This isn’t true at all at United. Most of IT works in Chicago or Houston and they come in a day a week or so. Just like any large corporation, some teams are better than others. As a whole, it’s a good place to work.

The only free perks for working in airline industry is the flying benefits. Otherwise no one would work for them.

Depends. For software engineers, overall, it is a high-pressure environment. Most tech managers are people who have stayed at the company for a really long time and ended up in so-called positions. They do not upgrade their skills but expect their subordinates devs to be able to handle any layer or the full stack. There is so much less importance to training or following proven methodologies. Scrum teams are a joke, agile is a joke, and quality testing is also a joke. Speedy delivery is always encouraged over code and quality standards. Knowledge of most systems is constrained to certain individuals, and documentation is a rabbit hole with versions and versions of similar ro same documents. New hires are paid more than existing employees who do more than they are asked for. It is a place you stick to or a place you stay at when you do not have a choice or the time to upgrade your skills and move out. You spend most of your time in unnecessary meetings if you are an FTE. If you are a contractor, you are just a number, nothing more. Some managers and some resources cross all kinds of lines here. The etiquette lines are blurred, the racial bias lines are blurred, the rules of engagement of contractors are blurred, rules of engagement of what general meetings are blurred. There are too many Indians at the company in development roles. If you have w choice, stay away.
