- Currently at Shopify, well positioned to get promoted to staff before long but it wouldn’t be a huge raise, max 15% I’d guess - Shopify and startup remote, C1 is a 1 hr commute each way 3x per week which is its main issue - startup is an estimate but I’m close to an offer and told them 250k to leave my current job - Shopify and startup tech is nice, C1 may be a bit more dated but I like the tools (Spark) Would love to hear anyone’s opinions, especially experiences at C1. Seemed quite friendly from my visit but I’m hesitant about the commute, especially with a young baby right now. Thanks for any advice!
Can't believe I am gonna recommend Capital One here. That is top of band for Richmond for Lead level. The culture is bad right now but if you're paid $40k more than your colleagues I guess it's tolerable.
Can you please share your profile
I was a staff at Shopify. Joined C1 after Shopify sold logistics to Flexport. Working at Shopify was such a great experience that I dont think even Faang can equal it. Now the thing about C1 is your calendar will be filled up meetings and you ll be forced to work after hours. Also there wont be any real work but only show offy stuff that helps you in calibrations. Bottom line take the promotion and then find a staff role somewhere else.
Thanks, really appreciate your experience here. I’m leaning towards staying at Shopify and hoping the staff promotion happens here. But C1 has 70k combined signing bonus and one year bonus so it is tempting to do what you say: join for a year and then interview again. Just seems risky and I don’t love job hopping.
To be fair C1 is not all bad. You get a lot of autonomy over infra so you get a lot more comfortable with system interactions, failover activities, datastore comparisons etc. Also they have a sweet severence policy (5 months pay if you are PIPed) So if you are not on a visa, it might not be the worst place
Unless there is a need to change I don’t recommend to change., wfh value more than 50 kin my opinion
Thanks, that’s the way I’m leaning
I am one level higher at C1 then the level you are offered in Richmond and that offer is more than my salary. 🙁
Sorry to hear. It helped my negotiation that I wasn’t willing to consider leaving for less than what they eventually offered.
I know US based Shopify L6s who are paid around $250k. You're underpaid.
Yeah, I did a terrible job negotiating when I joined. But I don’t think I can fix that now without leaving
Sadly I agree. Especially these days, Shopify likes keeping comp low. They aren't in the business of p paying people what they are worth. They pay people what they will accept. How about: Get promoted to staff, get your 15%. Leave for a staff ENG job paying more. Boomerang back to Shopify in a year for a proper L7 salary.
Congrats OP. May I ask is shopify data engineering team in Canada have any relationship with US team? Like they have two opening now for Sr. DE Embedded and Central in Americas. Is shopify DE more focused on data warehousing and analytics or building data platform Etc. Thanks and congrats again.
Every team has a mix of US and Canada in my experience. DE is warehousing and analytics mostly, I’m not sure what they call the data platform team externally but that’s who builds the platform.
If you don't mind me asking, what tech stack do you use on a regular basis?
Take the remote one. Commuting is for chumps.
Your C1 offer has no equity? My friend that works there says she gets equity, though I’m sure it’s very little.
How does Shopify pay that little
Fr, first time I see C1 beating an actual tech company
Was thinking the same.
