Which big tech companies fire mediocre employees?

I work for Google. You should be horrible in order to get fired. As long as you are mediocre - You have job security (Googlers, correct me if i'm wrong). It's not an optimal strategy, but it's convenient for me as an employee. Is it the same for other big tech as well? How is it in FB, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple? What about Chinese companies such as Tencent and Bytedance? What do you think is the philosophy behind it? #google #facebook #amazon #bytedance #tencent

But it is harder to get in. So the interview process should filter out mediocres

Smart does not mean work hard everyday

Facebook gEKd541 Oct 10, 2020

The interview process cant really predict if you'll be a terrible employee... (or a mediocre employee). It's also not harder than all these other companies (at least not substantially higher to an extent that will clear out mediocrity). Even in the places with a lower bar, you are required to be very smart

Microsoft KTKE52 Oct 10, 2020

hard to survive for those mediocres who are aslo slackers..

Microsoft 🎄5️⃣🅾️ Oct 10, 2020

They better not be using Slack

Bloomberg madmaxxxx Oct 10, 2020

Bloomberg. You can even be terrible, and do almost nothing and you won't get fired.

Bridgewater Associates MLM59 Oct 10, 2020

I heard this too

Clari bezos413 Oct 10, 2020

How does this make sense ?

Facebook gEKd541 Oct 10, 2020

Doesnt happen in FB. If you're not trending to meet the bar, you'll be out within 1-2 halves. It depends on how bad your performance is

Facebook gEKd541 Oct 10, 2020

Btw, I dont find keeping mediocre people a benefit to employees. Yes, it benefits people that want to slack or that would otherwise be slacking, but strong performers suffer. People dont generally enjoy working on teams where colleagues are not really putting an effort

Bloomberg PgvV73 Oct 20, 2020

Have some empathy. You never know of the person is dealing with something in his personal life. It would be terrible if that were the case and you loose job too.

Microsoft 🎄5️⃣🅾️ Oct 10, 2020

Same at Microsoft, you have to be consistently horrible to get fired or do something really stupid

Netflix

Netflix ciofva1708 Oct 10, 2020

Won’t fly at Netflix. You’ll be gone within a couple months.

Microsoft poutin Oct 10, 2020

Seriously, how can they judge you in a couple of months? Especially with the complexity of Netflix. Of course if you're not putting out any PRs sure but how would you measure mediocrity in that time?

Microsoft shp Oct 11, 2020

Netflix only hires very experienced people. They should be able to ramp up quickly and be contributing a good amount in a few months

Salesforce wjxl86 Oct 10, 2020

Doesn't happen at Salesforce.

Salesforce 🌺aloha Oct 22, 2020

It does in sales and marketing
