Joined FB 3 years back. Went from E4 to E5 and close to pushing to E6, but probably still a year away. It is, well I hate working at FB now. All the broken tools, the crappy code base and then that goddamn hack dialect of php. I notice I really struggle in interviews with systems design cause we never design anything at FB and just throw shit together. I really have to study and common systems since we use none of them, for example Kafka. Even coding interviews are hard. I spend most my time in hack and nobody wants to see that. I can do basics with python, but get called out on not knowing all the small details during interviews now. I know a bit of c++ but failed concurrency question at Google when I tried using it. I did manage to get some offers. I really want get away from all that broken FB tech. I do have trouble with lowering TC that much. I am trying to negotiate, but not getting better offers. Should I take them? #Shopify: offer 340k TC #MongoDB: offer 300k TC #Stripe: offer 315k TC #Spotify: TC 315k TC Google, Uber, Twitter, Roblox, Bloomberg, Apple: all failed Current FB TC: 390k TC
Is E6 that easy at FB?
Shopify growth rate is crazy ...although not confident about the canadian ceo who recently asked employee to increase productivity by 40% within a year.
Honestly, try to work at a company that builds platforms for others. Things tend to have more thought put into their design. Shopify and Stripe are examples of this. It’s okay to take a TC cut for awhile to learn new skills and to fix wlb
Why not move to a different team at Facebook? Find a team who is working on something you find interesting. The same kind of issues you are experiencing with broken tech and lack of learning can be found in almost all companies, it’s up to you to take care of your career growth.
already moved twice. the work is more coordinating and making the right fixes. but tech wise not super challenging. so many places in FB are such a mess and easy impact is lying all over. pick that up, set that up, point it out and claim impact for each and you do very wel. but it is boring
wtf are you talking about? did you work anywhere except FB? “broken FB tech” fb infra is one of the best, maybe only google is better It is not clear why would anyone leave FB for lower TC or same level at worse companies more TC? valid reason levelup? also valid
Maybe people want to leave and build things which they believe in more than the metaverse :)
The op didn’t mention that. Only a bunch of silly tech issues that every company has
Never compromise on TC
Which team man? I think what you build or design depends on team also. But yeah, to show impact, you have to move fast and build shit which are good for short term and liability for long term.
I’m in shops at the moment. Fb is so big, it really is not a fast moving place. limited process, but the act of writing code is hard here. Spend so much going through other bad code and working around things and fixing stuff others break since we are in one monolith for the company
stripe easily. Once they IPO ur comp will go crazy high
Which one was the easiest out of all the ones you got offers from? Maybe I have a shot too
Shopify and Stripe were pretty straightforward. Mongo had a small twist during design interview, but I said that is how we do it at FB and looks like they bought it. Spotify must be desperate since I did poorly. Phone screen was super easy: check if string is palindrome 😅
Palindrome check ? WTF ? Companies are still asking this!
