I'm deciding between two: - Series C startup in medical insurance field, founded in 2020, 150 employees only 60 reviews on App Store. - Series B startup in automobile field(not a car manufacturers), founded in 2016, 50 employees, couple thousands reviews on App Store and Google Play. Second one wants to write a service from ground up and that's what I'm looking for, I want to make decisions on architectures instead of just being a normal IC, but it seems the first one is growing really fast, but I probably just gonna add on other people's code.... current TC: 180k
You may need to channel future you on this one. What we know about startups is that you'll roll up your sleeves regardless if it your original code or (enhancing) other people's. The true questions are: 1) Where are you in the spectrum of you career? 2) Would you rather build sandcastles from dry sand or an irrigation system from a flooded region? More importantly, 3) If the company folds unceremoniously, which would you regret being part of the least?
Series B. If you want to build services from the ground up series A-B sized startups are typically cranking out tons of new stuff. Some less cool, but others with lots of complexities

There’s a framework you can use around quality of investors, founders, early employees, growth and retention metrics https://www.productlessons.xyz/article/how-to-evaluate-startup-job-offer But there’s no guaranteed formula, so I usually just go w the option where I’ll learn the most from the smartest people. Then pray for the best. Oh and if you’re deciding on Series B just because you want to make architecture decisions, make sure that’s the most important thing to you
