This question is targeted specifically at Googlers. I find hard to believe that Google doesn’t have an equivalent of GPT-3 or better. Or do you think that the OpenAI folks actually stubbed upon new IP(aka new architecture). Or is it simply overhyped. What do people at Google actually think about this product?
Google has LaMDA. They are just too chickened to release it to the wild.
I think they’re right to be chickened out. Politicians will be quick to scrutinize anything similar released by Google to the public. Wouldn’t be surprised if Google’s equivalent is being turned into a more “refined” product that avoids most if not all controversial discussion. The downside is the “bias” this adds because of product decisions, since it will be more “politically correct”. Google has more to lose than OpenAI. I think Microsoft is lucky to have “outsourced” this to an independent brand with less to lose. Luck, smarts, whatever.
You’re right that Google is in a more precarious position to release something like ChatGPT. They’re also the incumbent that tried to protect their existing business (how would they display ads in one or two served pages instead of pages and pages of search results.)
ChatGPT is just a human ranked QnA layer trained on top of GPT3. The transformers/tech in GPT3 came from Google. And before that some of the ideas and work came from academics, Yan Lecun and Yoshua Bengio. The tech is not new. Google has their own tech. They just didn’t make it public. ChatGPT is overhyped.
I would say the hype around it is getting ridiculous. But in some respects it's also not overhyped. This is unequivocally the fastest dispersion rate of any technology invented in history. But you're right that Google probably has something just as good and will be releasing it soon.
I'm assuming OP meant chat? GPT. Because GPT3 has been out for a year. From what I've heard, they have a project called lambda. I think the guy in the news earlier in the year saying that AI was sentient was working on that at Google.
Academic and industrial research labs have published essentially the same model with very impressive results over the past few years. The reason ChatGPT is getting so much interest now imo is simply because OpenAI made it a live tech demo that anyone can try, and normal people don’t read or really gaf about research publications. It’s another case of “the medium is the message”
