Housing: It costs 5M to get the nice suburb with yard and safe neighborhood and good commute and etc. Sure, you could live in tri-valley but then you're not really in the bay. In other cities (Chicago for example) you can get that 5M home for 600k-1M and still feel part of the city. Cultural: Berkeley-Oakland normative culture is the type that feeds the homeless in People's Park and protests against turning said homeless-overrun park into a Berkeley dorm. Gross. Also the under-$900-theft-can't-be-prosecuted law. Idiotic laws and culture. Vandalism is not stopped. Long lines everywhere. The society structure is overwhelmed. Classiness: It's not racial. I've been to cities like Nashville, Chicago, DC, etc., and unless you go to the really bad parts of town, most people are productive members of society. Bay area has the worst of entitled smelly hobo littering leecher freeloaders. They drag the social system down for everyone else. Even if you are rich you have to deal with such people loitering around (San Mateo for example). The one exception is Alameda island where classiness is still expected of every human being. For now. Lack of diversity of professions: Bay area squeezes out everyone who is non-tech. No random woodworking shops, polka clubs, ice climbing, artists, pet frog distributors, comedians, etc, or, they are living in cramped sh*tty spaces and/or on the fringes of society. It's inaccessible to start a project in a garage, because ability to afford a garage is a luxury here. People in the bay don't even know what they're missing in terms of the fullness of life. (Imagine you had a home with lots of land for 300k and were still close enough to a city / things you wanted to do and your job was not hyper-competitive. What creative things could you do with your time and eased state of mind?) Competition: Even if you make it to terminal level, your kids will need to start the rat race all over again. And they have to work in tech or they can't afford living here. In bay it is sink or swim, and you are competing with the smartest domestics and internationals. Bay is good for one thing only - tech jobs. And that's not reason enough to forgo everything else about life. - End of rant - Here's my details, you're free to judge me: From a small u.s. town. Funded my own way through undergrad with merit scholarships. Just a regular employee. Plateaued at Workday P3. Have a serious gf and we plan to have kids in our 30s. 200. Gn.
Where are you leaving to?
Wokayyyy byyyyeeeee👋
Where are you going
Well said.
I’m sorry that happened
I left for far less.
Where did you go?
Just please don’t bring everything you hate with you to Seattle.
Yeah, but what about his GF. If she makes as much, then with $400k combined TC they will add to competition in Seattle.
Are you still at workday? Are they remote?
Top G: things arent expensive. You just broke lol
That's the thing tho. Op is not broke. Op achieved 200 bay -- he/she could definitely achieve 100-150 LCOL-MCOL which is more than enough for a comfortable & "accomplished" life.
Take DC MCOL for example. You could EASILY raise a family good schools safe nbhood on 150 single earner.
Bye felicia 👋
