Why is it so hard to find a product mgmt role in the valley even with experience? I don’t see sftwr engineers struggling to find a job.
It has an obvious reason. For every 8 to 10 developer in teams, there is 1 PM. It's like asking why they are fewers eng managers than engineers.
Agreed. But it’s not the same. Eng managers have specific skill sets that the company is looking for. It’s not the same for PM. It’s a very diverse role ( I mean a good PM). Comparing EMs and PMs doesn’t make much sense.
In comparing in the sense of ratio to ICs.
aside from ratio, I think there are two key factors. (a) unique, rare skillset required for strong pm as general matter. while hard to get pm role it is almost always difficult to find good pm. (b) related: role varies significantly by company and even team/org. pm a and pm b often two completely different jobs, similar in title only.
Story of my life! I do really well with every call I get but getting ‘good’ companies to reach out has definitely been difficult.
