Why did Silicon Valley swing hard right?
I’ll be joining FB soon as E5, but I am not sure if Amazon (L5) has prepared me enough to ramp up and start making an ‘impact’. I have a few weeks before joining, what can I learn, get better at right now so I won’t hit a speed bump learning a language or a technology that I could have easily learnt before joining. Or would you suggest teams that are much better aligned for someone joining from amazon. #amazon #facebook
Both E4 and E5 at facebook map to L5 at Amazon. L5 is a relatively wide band that spans two levels at facebook from expectations perspective, so you should be good. Amazon is also more mature when it comes to growing leadership talents, so you will find plenty of opportunity to have impact.
Thanks!
I left Amazon as a near L6 promo to start as E5 at FB. Joined my team in mid June and have already been able to ramp up on the tech/language and working on a small project. I guess it depends on the team but I feel pretty confident already and feel like I was prepared coming in.
The best thing you can do is recharge / spend time with a family for a few weeks. FB will give you enough time to ramp-up. Besides everything is custom - source control, frameworks, tooling - you can't really learn it outside.
Please please please, don’t bring Amazon culture to fb. It’s way more valuable than making impact in your first half.
"Dont bring Amazon culture" makes sense. But FB culture itself is quite dumb in the industry, please enlighten us about the value!
Could you expand on what exactly you mean by amazon culture and not bringing it. Most LPs are not too bad, or do you mean the lack of empathy and general rudeness, that I do agree with you
