TL;DR. How can I make more money switching jobs after cliff? FBE6 12yoe +PhD TC:570k (w-2) Seattle I am reaching my vest cliff later this year, and with the recent stock drop it makes sense for me to think about the next step I come from Microsoft, so I didn't need to do any numbers Meta E5 (and tbh most of my other offers except Amazon) paid a shit ton more than MS 64. It was too easy of a decision. Now I am E6, have been for 2.5 years. I have my vesting pipeline full. TC as of last year w-2 was 570 (let's ignore the latest bloodshed) and I am often sitting at EE ratings (slightly above default I guess?) . Normally I do horizontal jumps (I have never been good at BSing my way to a higher level through a job switch, all has been done through old fashioned promotions). However, now jumping feels like I would get a TC cut , at the very least for the first couple of years. So how do people make this jumps to avoid the cliff and make more? Do you uplevel at jump? Looking at offers neither apple ict5 nor Google L6 or MSFT l67 will match what I have. Should I aim for Google l7, msft l68, and push for a higher ict5 offer? I am deep into AR/VR related skills, 12 years of experience, well-known well-received product releases, a PhD and a couple of relatively well-known publications (every now and then a colleague would say ooh I read your paper!). I do have director and VP level connections in some of those that may be able to break through? Will I have a shot? If I am to stick at a comparable level, how can I get a pay bump?
AR VR is hot! You can fight for up level
Meta e6 scope is at most 66 in MSFT, there is no way you can get 68. Some team that matches your expertise might be willing to offer 67.
But Microsoft pays soooo much lower than Meta, I mean even after the stock bloodshed. I want to consider them because they do ar/vr and I was happy there once. However it just does not make any financial sense. Even at 67 it is quite a step down
Well, 67 can definitely match your current TC and comes with a bigger scope. I actually think it's a major upgrade. Normally 67 is either a M2 or an architect of its team. How many people do you lead now?
Try Amazon L7 AS.
ICT5 is possible. Range for ICT5 is wide and it covers both E6 and E7. Some senior ICT5 did lateral moves to Meta E7
TC or GTFO
It's there. You have to read my wall of text I guess. Anyway it is 570K, FB E6. 12yo+PhD
Cheers. I skipped to the bottom and didn’t see it. Needs a tl;dr 😁
