Recently received an offer from Khan Academy. Wondering how is it like working there? Wlb, culture, de&i, benefits, leaderships, etc. Any insight is greatly appreciated before I decide. #tech #edtech
Sounds like one of the few places where you might actually contribute to something.
What was the offer and location?
What position?
How much was the offer and what location is it for ?
TC is ~170K before base salary negotiation. Remote, but based in SF. I prefer not to reveal the position at this time.
Could you please share how you negotiated your base salary? 🙏
I enjoy working there! WLB is really good imo. People are super friendly and supportive, we have a good remote working culture and plenty of slack meme channels to enjoy. There has been a lot of senior leadership turnover recently but I personally don't find that it impacts my day to day work at all. I came from a FAANG company and I actually am interested in what I do at Khan Academy - it's nice to see the actual benefits we have on learners!
This is incredibly helpful insight. I’ve also worked at FAANG in the past. Do you mind if we chat via DM?
I think KA's mission is important. It seems like a lot of people are gravitating toward educational content on YouTube. I had wondered if that's something the team has taken into consideration when evaluating the product. @creed_ I'd be interested in hearing more about what you find most interesting about your work, if you're comfortable sharing.
You can make twice as much at FAANG and contribute more by donating and still have better benefits and the meme channels. If someone wants to sell me a job by saying “you are helping to better the society “ and “we are a family “ yadda yaddda , I run as fast as I can
This is definitely a fair point! I'm also sure it is very team-dependent too. But I can't deny that there are definitely improvements to my own mental health and day to day happiness from being excited to work on my tasks each day, and from a healthy wlb.
I know where you are coming from , and I think there is nice people like you that put purpose on what they do , for sure , but society not only doesn’t reward people like you , punish them.
I love working at Khan Academy. I have zero interest in working at a FAANG company TBH. I might be able to make more money at another valley company, but I get paid way more than I could make regionally as it is via Khan Academy. And I make enough money that I’m not looking for more. It’s a great place to work, I love the work, I don’t hate the company (which I would with FAANG. I think some of these companies like FB and Amazon actually make the world worse). I get paid well enough. I get a ton of time off, I rarely work more than 40 hours, the people are awesome, the engineering management is great, and the mission is amazing. I’ve had real growth opportunities and I have influence. Im honestly not sure how I could do better, all things considered. Are there some dysfunctions? Sure. But this is the least dysfunctional place I’ve ever worked.
Good news! I just signed my offer after a few days going back and forth with negotiation 😄 See you on the other side!
It's official after a couple salary negotiations. I'm starting at Khan Academy on June 28! Hope I make the right decision and looking forward to it!
Happy to have you here :)
