Got a PM offer at Capital One on an ML platform team. Location: NYC Base: $175K Singing bonus: $30k Bonus: 14-28K TC: $219-233k YOE: 5, 2-3 as a PM Mainly, is this a good offer for Manager level at C1? Also what’s the remote policy? None of my immediate team seems to sit at NYC, and was debating trying to push to make the role remote with a competing offer. Is this something they might consider, or are they very strict on this now? Thanks!
What songs do you have to sing to get your bonus?
PM is a not manager role.
It’s listed as Manager, Product Manager so not quite sure what that means in terms of levels?
The levels are for SWE are: A -> SA -> PA -> Manager or Lead There is no PA level for PMs. The PMs I’ve seen at manager level, don’t usually have anyone under them, but idk if that’s across the board. That might be what he means by it’s not a manager role.
Make sure you have a good manager. Also a PM in one of their ML orgs and the culture is not good.
Can you share what you mean about the ML orgs culturally?
1) It’s very disorganized; we have had an outage at least once every 1-2 weeks. Execution wise, not only do things don’t get built on time but they don’t get accounted for. Like we didn’t even know a feature wasn’t built because the responsible product POC wasnt identified. 2) Related to one, because we don’t have PgMs or Agile leads, a lot of PMs are focused on execution and run the Jira stuff. It’s annoying because I feel like I am doing more admin work than actual product work. 3) I guess coming from JP Morgan you may be already familiar but compliance is a big theme here. I am in talks with Cyber/Risk/Legal every week. I hate it because a lot of the direction ultimately comes from them. Too much red tape to do anything. 4) Leadership here is really a clown. And yes it’s worse than other companies. My product leadership does not know what “MVP”, “PRD” or other product knowledge. A senior manager actually asked me to explain the concept of MVP to them….
That's a very good offer for manager level at PM and it's good as hell to be an early career PM these days.....but if you are in the commercial bank GL....I'm guessing your director has zero PM experience or there PM experience as been entirely in capital one. Take it for the good money especially with 401k match.
100%. My product leadership has no PM experience (or they have been at C1 for 10 years and thats all they have). Learning nothing and getting dumber each day just talking to these people.
Standard offer for NYC. Unless you have a better offer for leverage you kind of get what you get here. You could ask for more signing bonus but it’s basically a coin flip if you get it
Any idea how high signing bonuses can go?
More than 30k requires VP approval. You can always ask for more.

The offer is good for NYC. If you do push for Remote (which isn’t likely to be supported) they’ll try to push you to the Richmond salary level, which would be ~$35k lower in Base I think.
Got it, thanks for the info. Is the hybrid policy actively tracked? I’m not necessarily opposed to it, but given none of my team is actually in NYC, wondering if they’ll actively force 3 days a week.
It is tracked as or recent. HR is messaging people and there management chain if you don’t badge in 3x/week
