Continuous 23 'Unfortunately email' but still struggling.

I am Machine Learning Engineer, having 6 year+ of experience in this domain and 10+ patents. Was working with a reputed multinational company in Bangalore(25LPA). My girlfriend was in the Netherlands so was finding for a Europe opportunity, Landed in Austria. but there was no company culture, frankly speaking, In Europe, the IT culture is worse than in India. They hired me for building a machine learning model and deploying it to production, but everything was on presentation, and I was only the team member in ML Team. I was writing unit test cases and really rough behavior from managers, Small German City - So no Indian - No friend - and with that Covid - Work from home. It was frustrating. And the salary was 55K Euro, Austria follows a 14-month salary structure and with high tax, my in-hand salary was less than my last Indian salary. Then I thought I should start exploring the opportunities in other European cities, mainly Amsterdam. was interviewed by 23 different companies(London, Amsterdam, Norway), around 60% of the opportunities, I was not selected for the visa and language problem(In Amsterdam, many places dutch speaking is mandatory - probably they wite the codes in the local language :P), Some of the famous experience I am sharing here: 1. Twitter London - October 2021: Coding interview: The interviewer asked me about the past works, recommendation engine, and NLP, I answered everything, he looked happy, then he asked me to have worked in unsupervised learning - I answered No, then he surprisingly asked me to write down the algorithm of 'k-means' from scratch. I was struggling, and he was not helping, the end of the interview - I executed the code. but after 2 days the recruiter sent me the 'Unfortunately you are not selected' email. 2. Amazon Dublin - November 2021: Coding Interview: the interviewer was asking me 3 very simple LC questions, I answered, I answered quickly, he asked me some stupid follow-up questions, but then he said himself the questions were stupid. Again after 2 days 'Unfortunately, you are not selected' email. Learning - if I will get a common question - I should act like :wooh difficult question - how can I solve it. 3. Booking Com - February 2022 : Amsterdam - hackerank passed, Coding passed, ML interviews passed (though the response was I am more inclined to the ML Scientist) but failed in system design interview. I asked the Recruiter to please provide me the specific feedback so that I can improve myself. he gave me 1 Con with 5 pros. In system design, the question was - I have to implement a multi-model monitoring dashboard. I used the LinkedList data structure to store the log. The advantage is - the write operation is super efficient, we always know the last pointer of the linked list, so it will be O(1), the disadvantage is - the read operation is not efficient - we need to traverse the whole linked list to find an element, so the complexity will be O(n) there is another concept to store the log into a binary tree because the write an read operation complexity is O(logN), it is a more write-based operation so I used a linked_list-based data structure over the binary tree. I told him twice, but it seems he has used an array for the same.Learning: Luck Matters 4. Mollie January 2022: In the JD, they asked, they were looking for tensorflow, experience with vertex AI. I built the home assignment solution with TFExtended, Kubeflow orchestrator which was using Vertex AI. The technical feedback was- I have good tensrflow experience but they are looking for a non-Tensorflow candidate. Learning: Sonam bewafa hai(A hindi meme) 5. Bol.com December 2021: They sent me a psychometric question and aptitude question set, I passed aptitude and the recruiter called me for the Fit interview. During the interview time, an interviewer found from the answers of the psychometric test that I don't own my tasks is totally wrong, So again an Unfortunately email. BTW in the interview time, I figured out they are solving the problem most novice way, I suggested it can be executed in a more efficient way. and the interviewer agreed. Learning: Fake Ego matters, India - or Europe, Everywhere. Observation: a. Indian and Chinese interviews should smile during the interview process, They are most hard to handle. It seems the GDP of the two countries depends on their foreign salary, Please smile. b. We talk about machine learning model explainability, there should be a proper transparent feedback explainability system. I have been working with a small startup with 65K Euro early salary. Not happy with the current ole..questions for the community: a. should I take a break and try out something else. b. should I continue the interview process or else start a 'motivational stand-up comedy' :P Thanks in advance..happy weekend Guys :) update: took 2 months break, got offers from PrimeVideo, Bol, and Elsevier #europe #tech #interview

Well, it seems you are not aware what does โ€œGDPโ€ stand for. Pretty sure, ignorance is a hindrance

HSBC d400004 Mar 11, 2022

yeah okay so GDP is definitely not calculated this way, and i think your interviewing skills may be the issue. just thinking out loud

Amazon drowning ๐Ÿ’ต Mar 11, 2022

Many times one is in denial state, best way is to look inward and see where you can improve. Take a break, learn prepare and go again!

Google kWeller Mar 11, 2022

I feel your communication and or interview skills either one of them is bad. Being an MLE you shld have been able to code soundly at least an un-optimized version of kmeans. Im sure they didnโ€™t even care about your coding in that round but in fact were looking how you can take a basic question and then at least put it into a algo format ie thinking ability. But dont get too demotivated you will I guess improve and get a job. Else if your LC is good stop applying to ML roles and apply to software engineering roles only. Most importantly if anyone tells you anything here or interview tell them at least I have a girlfriend ๐Ÿ˜‚

Philips XFPQ83 OP Mar 11, 2022

thanks for the positive words :)

Google kWeller Mar 11, 2022

But honestly from the way you said seems you can do the Lc thing well. Just join a big data team as a software engineer. You will still be close to ML and also make money nicely. If you want more info or help dm me.

Lmao the dumb brags about patents and even dumber learnings

Google kWeller Mar 11, 2022

Patents nowadays are the biggest joke. You can fart a little differently and get a patent if it smells differently too.

Communication def an issue

JPMorgan Chase km7g6p Mar 11, 2022

Also how tf are you in ML and can't even describe KMeans?

TuSimple xX lol Xx Mar 11, 2022

Wasn't he asked to code it out? That's a little different than just using it from some pre-built package/module/etc.

Uber dhtjgc Mar 11, 2022

Jeez dude People with very little talent are getting hired because they are not whiny little self entitled brats, and have a better attitude.

American Express JCHa15 Mar 11, 2022

Also, Indian and Chinese most likely will give better feedback that you think you performed. White will smile on your face and backstab in the feedback. Just my experience. Never encountered a black interviewer. Where are you people?

Please hurry. Industry needs you.

I know who you are and I know the reputed mutinational company you're talking about. I would say taking a break is better. Besides, India is always an option, a friend of mine got SDE2 amazon at 70Lakh (including 4year stocks) with 3yoe. You have more experience than him. He got other offers as well, all were in similar range. Hard pill but tech is much much better in India than europe these days.

Philips XFPQ83 OP Jun 4, 2022

Agree with you dude.. tech in India is much better than in Europe.
