Failed meta on-site. I have interviews coming up with snap, msft and some tier 3 for ic roles. I got 6y of xp at Faang but I am really bad at LC hard. It’s a profitable business > 5y old , ~20 employees Workout video subscription service. The tech debt is abyssal: *iOS (obj-c, not updated), android (flutter), web + api (cold fusion + a bunch of c# core services) and tv apps (Apple TV, etc.). Their app is Netflix like. *No ci/cd (in 2023…) *Poor tooling, analytics and monitoring *takes forever for new features rollout What scares me is that they didn’t follow a single good practice on the eng side. Dev velocity is pretty low. They have been super nice, and willing to take a bet on me especially since I don’t have high leadership experience. I’d rather say no, than yes and change my mind. Role: CTO. Tech strategy, lead team of 3, hands on code and active member of leadership board Base 175k Equity (not sure what to ask) Remote Health insurance, 401k match 4% Unlimited PTO (> 5w recommended) Emphasis on wlb YOE 7 TC 0 NW <600k Would you do it for 3yrs and have the CTO line on your resume, or join bigger tech for L4-L5 roles?
folks voting #1 to reduce competition, it's tough out there

That CTO on your resume means literally nothing unless it’s CTO of FAANG. Every third engineer in Silicon Valley is a CTO or CEO of their own pet project. Source: I’m CTO
This is a profitable business, not a side project
One of my teammates at Amazon was CTO of a startup that got acquired by Amazon. They joined as an SDE II.
