How much to save per child for college / 529 if they were born today?

Public college averages around $150K for tuition + room and board these days and private is around $300K. List price will likely at least double in the next 18 years. How mich would/will you save?

I am not an Indian but I'd send my kid to India. It seems like life is wonderful there according to Blind

If one were to have 600 K for the kid , how much should one put per month in 529 ?

Wells Fargo pow75 Nov 14, 2019

One would only have to put 600k once for one’s child.

Dell LUHV04 Nov 14, 2019

I mean on a per month basis how much do you need to put to get to 600k when the kid gets old

The super rich top 1% should be taxed to pay for free college. That's 420k TC or 6x the national average. Screw those guys. Warren 2020

Bernie’s plan is better. Although warren wrote the two income trap book at Berkeley, she just doesn’t go far enough with getting us on par with all of the other first world countries.

Or we could start not paying teachers $400K to teach one class like E Warren made. The real solution is take away the NFP status of colleges. There’s no reason you should get a tax deduction for donating to a university who pays their president in the millions.

Vote Warren. Sure she’ll break up your fat TC, but at least your kids will get free college.

Trust the prof who earned $400K teaching one class.

Wealthfront estimates that a newborn would need need 210k to attend 4 years at UC Berkeley (in state cost) 18 years from now. Assuming a 529 account with 6% yearly return this means saving ~$130/week for the next 18 years.

Intel zgklodg OP Nov 14, 2019

Wealthfront sounds way off. Quick google search shows the tuition plus room and board today is $40K/year today.

Dell LUHV04 Nov 15, 2019

So how much do you speculate it will be ?

I hope the government gets their head out of thier a** and stop guarateeing trillions of dollars of taxpayers money for student loans. Loaning hundreds of thousand of dollars to an 18 year old to spend on a degree he/she deems fit is insanity. Once the loans stop the universities will get competitive and affordable
