H1-B people: Relax.

I have been through two major recessions in the past while on an H1-B Came here in 2000, lost job in 6 months and went back to India. Took up a job for 15k rupees writing C code. Came back to US for MS in 2002 with a TA. Lost TA in the first semester but someone managed to pull through with debt etc. Lost job again in 2008 and went back to India. This time I went with 100k savings and had a blast back home, relaxed for a year, acquired new skills, and came back in 2010 to CA. Got a FAANG offer in 2012. Got GC in 2012 (porting old 2005 date) Citizen in 2017. Single income household still 2 kids. I am at an early stage company in a very senior position. TC 430k NW 5.5 mil (age 44) I can share that while in 2000 the layoff didn’t hit me at all, the 2008 one had me on edge and stress levels were through the roof. I was newly married, was looking forward to staying here and was extremely anxious at staying on here, if nothing else not to look like a loser coming back home and the fear of the unknown. EVERYTHING was ok!! Life will go on and when I look at the extreme stress in 2008 it was unwarranted. I know how you feel. Take a deep breath, meditate, go for a long walk/workout and most importantly STOP 🛑 watching the news(you cannot control it). But have a contingency plan. Prepare LC /SD Keep resume ready Starting keeping your network warm. Disconnect cable/news Uninstall social media And worst comes to worst to back to India. It’s not a war zone or a bad place to be. Your American $ savings will keep you afloat for a long time. Take care and good luck 🍀 #Meta #Amazon #Microsoft #Cisco #Twitter #stripe #google #Apple

Top job OP. However you were here in the golden period so to speak. Now GC is not something one can achieve while being alive

Damn, I’m not on H1B1 but good shit. You came here as an immigrant, went through difficult times but still pull out as a multimillionaire and you’re still fairly young. Congrats to you sir, I hope your kids realize how lucky they are !

Thank you for this. Had the longest night, couldn't sleep as I'm on H1B and have a family to look after. Happy to share that I received an email few mins ago that I'm safe. Feeling sad for all those affected. 😐

Motivational for affected. 5.5M net worth in 10 years with single income! That's pretty good. What contributed most in this? Stocks/real state or some other investment strategy.

1.5 Mil home value appreciation. 750k 401k 1.8 mil FAANG grant from 2012. ~1.5 Mil from savings growth through diversified but tech heavy investments. NW down from 7.3 million in Jan. NW does not include upside potential in current paper money but could easily be worth $2 mill in 3 years and as high as 10 if market recovers and company does well (or be 0)

Cool. Sorry I know this is not the intention of original post but I am in early 30s and curious how people build their net worth. If you don't mind can you share what was your house purchase value vs current value? Also how did you mange to keep most of your grant with purchase of real estate and also over a million saving? I see people mostly lose their grants when buying house or diversifying to other investments

H1. Remember I already had an H1 so any employer could file for me and came through a desi consultant.

Did your h1b not expire once you came back? If you come back to india after 2 months of not getting a job in US, then the h1b expires right? Or can we continue looking for jobs in US while in India till H1B is valid on passport? And after the h1b transfer is filed, then come back to US? Is this allowed?
