My landlord wants me to pay for entire August rent when I didn’t live in the apartment. I moved in on 9/1/2023. The housing contract is 08/25/2023 - 7/31/2024. This is in New Brunswick, NJ. What can I do? It’s my first time resting an apartment so I’m clueless Attached screenshot for more details
What does the contract say?

You might have to pay pro rated august rent. So 7/31*(your rent)
Ask him to prorate it.
Ok I will. Thanks
Then ask to pay partially. From 08/25 to 08/30
You owe him a prorated amount. That's probably what the owner is asking you about.
No, he wants me to pay the entire month rent.
I am not sure if he can legally ask that, because per contract you are moving in on the 25th. He can add that as a fee for sure, but cannot be rent. Rent by definition is in exchange of having a right to live in a property. If you can't possibly time travel and live there, what you pay for that period cannot be rent. For example, are you also liable for damages that may already have happened in August, if you are paying August rent.
You owe me the rent
You not getting it.
Rent = TC?
