I'm thinking of accepting Microsoft and declining Google. Google: L5 - ~400 TC, Senior IC role with possibility to get to be tech lead in the near future. Team not very interesting but can switch teams after a few months. Ultimate brand name IMO to have for an engineering resume. MS: Principal (65), ~480 TC. Principal role, will start leading 2-3 teams right away. More interesting work. Significantly more scope. Principal at MS doesn't sound too bad on the resume. I would've liked the G brand name on my profile but 80k is a significant delta. Delta in comp will drop to around 20k after the first two years given the front loaded vesting for G vs low refreshers at MS. I wish G had a better offer. Given the pay, better role, more impact / scope I'm considering declining G. YOE: 11. Current TC: ~330. #google #microsoft #software #engineering #swe
Do what makes you happy
Lol of course go for ms
Go for Microsoft. You don’t need brand names with that YOE and Microsoft is a big brand in itself. If you could get google interviews while in Bloomberg, you’ll definitely get google interviews after Microsoft.
I know several seniors who became principals in Microsoft. Generally, there is a bit more title inflation in MSFT, so don’t make a decision on title alone. Looking at your TC, MSFT makes sense but know that managing a team comes with its own stress, so make sure that additional 80k is worth it.
At YOE 11 where do you think you should’ve been in your career? Also you can always go back to G in few years with increased responsibilities with your experience at MS. Promotion way to get there at G would be slower.
This. I would like to have more impact and scope. That's why MS seems like the right choice for me.
SDE 2 -> L5 meta -> staff google
Eh 80k TC difference isn’t really that much at that level of TC, especially after taxes (<20% comp difference). Don’t think in absolutes here, but relative!
Remember, you will see a 4 year cliff at MSFT. The annual refreshers will be only 55K or so and that too vesting over 5 years. If you think work is better at MSFT, go for it. But 80 K is not that much of a difference
You are doing fine. No compromise in role & title Even if it was same Tc, MSFT should have been first choice! You can get Tc bump easily but can’t get seniority & career progression that easily
