My AppDynamics offer

First, congrats for all AppDynamics folks! I just want you to give an idea of "what if I joined APPD before the IPO"? I got an offer from APPD a year ago for a staff engineer. The base was 170-ish. The RSU was 14,000. I remember the preferred price was around $12 or so. Given the Cisco's purchase at $26/share, the RSU would be $360K over 4 years. I ended up joining FB with $400k RSU at that time and currently 30% up.

You made the right call. What would have your employee number been?

I have no idea. Already there was 1000 employees a year ago.

Hmm so maybe appdynamics employees aren't all making bank 🤔

Facebook 0xfaceb00c OP Jan 25, 2017

Of course. I also got an offer from Uber :) Similar stories can be found at Pure Storage, Go Pro, Pandora etc.

What do you mean?

Amazon BabaBlackS Jan 25, 2017

thanks , so it's not always worth joining a pre ipo

Facebook 0xfaceb00c OP Jan 25, 2017

Snap should be very different but for many 1-2 billion companies I don't think it is much better than Google or Facebook.

Amazon BabaBlackS Jan 25, 2017

I believe Uber is same

Sounds about right. I have friends whose offers were similar around 2013. They are not definitely making millions.

Do these companies give out refreshers ? Or is it the initial grant only ?

Facebook 0xfaceb00c OP Jan 26, 2017

APPD offer letter says I was eligible to receive annual bonus including additional stocks. They say some target number. The same with the Uber offer. But my twitter friend who joined just before the IPO didn't receive any refreshers.

AppDynamics scaredycat Jan 26, 2017

well, we do get annual bonuses in rsus if that's the question.

Would you mind sharing your level at FB OP?

Facebook 0xfaceb00c OP Jan 26, 2017

E5. Lower band. Google offer was L4.

Thanks. Great decision. :)

Thanks for sharing this info.Very useful.

Is this not common knowledge? On the rare occasion a start up doesn't fail only the investors and founders are paid out. If post ipo stock appreciation is significant enough them employees can luck out but always on a smaller scale.

AppDynamics scaredycat Jan 26, 2017

I wish my friends read this so that they would friggin stop congratulating me coz I'm laughably/embarrassingly far away from being a millionaire.

Amazon BabaBlackS Jan 26, 2017

what is your role and how long

LinkedIn FnYd33 Jan 26, 2017

Tech has jaded us so much. A couple of hundred thousand dollars is a good payout and worth celebrating/being congratulated. You don't have to make millions, its a very substantial amount of money by any measure.
