    Jesus, yeah...I'm not a SWE, but I've had to hop every 18 months or less just because companies are set up to ignore value increases.

    I won't be comp'd at the bottom of the market, so I hop.

      @elena25 I'm not a SWE. So many of you codemonkeys (no offense intended) don't realize that most of IT isn't comp'd the way you are. I'm an infrastructure guy, so a 120k base in the DFW area is toward the top of the market for a (Design and Build) Engineer. We get 10-20% annual bonus, but no RSU, no signing bonus (unless you have a compelling reason to demand one).

      We make far less than most SWEs I see posting on blind.

      TC: 132k
      If I had stayed where I was in 2016, my TC would be less than 100k; I've changed jobs 3 times since then.

      Personally I also like to move every 2-4 years but I was recently hiring and my recruiter told me they avoid hoppers (less than 4 years) because it’s costly to the team to have to refill positions so quickly. It might still be narrowing your options to hop every 2 years, if other recruiters think like this.

      @Pined, that's a fair point.

      @madhuridix, can I safely assume you know network engineers who clear SWE-type money? Are they at a FAANG? In the Bay area?

      Definitely don't want to live in Cali, so that's a bit limiting, but I know quite a number of Sr. Engineers in the networking space and not a single one of them does better than 150k TC.

      I would love to be wrong about this, though.

      More money only when you get stocks. RSU or bonuses. Salary raise is normal growth of 5% maybe.

    If you’re ok with 12 years of salary compression, you’re fine.

      OP's manager told him he makes well above what most software engineers make at 100k

  • Yeah, your career will suffer unless it’s a FANG or unicorn where hopefully you didn’t sell any shares and are no sitting on a huge pile of cash.

    Always keep learning and growing. Each company has its own unique culture and system. Expose yourself.

    I had Japanese colleagues who were at same place almost similar profile for 20+ yrs. I have colleagues not in US tough who are at same company for 15+ yrs.

    They are happy with work-life balance. If this make you feel better then continue. If you want a change try within your org if nothing intrests you then new company.

    Yes, if you ever want to change jobs companies and hr will think you are too institutionalized into one method and will have difficulties doing things a different way.

    They will prefer they person with the same experience over 3 to 4 jobs oppose to all at one company.
