I’m a 40 yo electric engineering dropout working with Business Intelligence in consultancy companies. For too long I’ve been just going with the flow and not progressing professionally. Finally, I want to get the control back but I’m quite lost where to steer to. I want to be great at something again. I thought of: 1- going back to university and starting all over again; 2- doing a data science bootcamp and apply to non-consultancy companies. 3- founding a company with prior purpose of learning things (since I’m cannot apply to MBAs). What would you suggest? One of the three above? Any other suggestion? Thanks!
leetcode->amazon sde->boomerang around->tc 300-400k. not hard, so long as you are citizen.
Pursue ML or AI nano degrees from Udacity, you’ll be done in 6-8 months with a new direction and purpose. And TC in those areas are 🔥🔥🔥
Udacity nanodegrees won't get you those 🔥TCs
The Nano degrees are not meant for prestige. It’s a quick way to learn without spending years in classrooms - get in and out. TC depends on your coding skills especially Engineers. PMs it’s debatable if an MBA will count from top tier program.
What is your TC now?

My mom started her PhD at 42 and went on to have a full career in Academia culminating as department Chair. Published over 80 journal papers, some of which have thousands of citations. After retirement, she is taking boot camp prepping for an operations role in tech. Do what you are passionate about, get some advice, plan and march ahead. We have tons of kids fresh out of college giving you advice here. Don’t be disheartened. For the highly motivated, the rules and rewards are different. Answering your question, try 2 followed by 3.
You are not too old to get an MBA if that’s what you really want.
What does #1 have to do with anything? It depends on some career requirements need a degree, but most would be a waste of time and money.
Thank you all for your comments! It’s really amazing to see people willing to help with honest opinions! Best regards to you all!
If you're in the US, don't go back to school. You'll be paying that debt off into your retirement. Guessing you're not in the US because you called it "going to university" though. Nothing wrong with doing a bootcamp, however in your 40s you should be looking at more senior/managerial roles. There's going to be bias against you for "younger" roles.
Thank you! Indeed, I’m not in the US. I was recently offered Product Owner positions but TC was even less of what I have today. That’s when it came to my mind to get back to fully technical positions, adding some current hot topics knowledge and trying to move to more managerial positions in that field.
Are DS roles a big boost in comp? If not it might be money and time wasted
