I graduated during summer 2018 and initially took a few months off to vacation, with a plan to find a job during the September new grad recruiting cycle. In mid September my Dad became extremely ill and it was looking like he wasn't going to survive. Long story short, I'm thankful to say that he eventually pulled through. Given that I had nothing tying me down, I ended up staying at home helping my family through the rough patch and basically gave up on trying to recruit while the metaphorical shit was hitting the fan. Now that the worst is over I've gotten back into the job hunting groove. Be honest. How big of a red flag is an 8 to 12 month long unemployment gap after graduating? Keep in mind that this anecdote isn't reflected on my resume. I'm only providing it here for context. I never planned on taking this much time off. FFS I feel like I screwed over my future.
It’s fine I know a couple people that took over a year to land their first job. Maybe do some side projects to add something to the gap
It’s normal for new grads to take a vacation or hiatus before starting full-time employment. Just be honest, you wanted to spend time with family before leaving to work somewhere new.
You were the primary caregiver for a close family member. If I was your hi would like you more, as I've been through similar. It makes you a more empathetic person, which is who I want as part of my team.
It’s not a red flag
No one cares
No red flag I’m hitting if interested pm your email
All good here. Post grad gaps are common.
And I would add not only post grads. Some people take leaves later in their career and 1 year is nothing in the grand scheme of things
It doesn’t matter at all. I had a 1 year gap between my undergrad and first job. And then another year between my first job and master’s. Nobody cared, nobody asked.
Many take a whole year off to travel to Machu Picchu ffs. Don't even sweat it.
