AWS or Microsoft?

Currently at Microsoft - TC 165k / L63 Have an offer from AWS - TC 200k / L6 I’m non-tech, not SWE, and on the East Coast. I’ve only been at Microsoft a few years. Overall I love Microsoft but not my current role or team, though I have great WLB the work is just a drag and not a challenge at all. The position with AWS is same geography with same ability to WFH. Which would you pick? Which do you feel sets up for a better long term career path?

Run away from AWS. You will regret it. The stress is not worth the money. Speaking from 5 yoe here.

Care to elaborate? Have heard this but that it is very team based. Keep in mind I wouldn’t be dev, but rather kind of similar to like a Senior SA.

When people ask me how I like working for Amazon I tell them the same thing, expect to work for your pay. WLB is not a priority in my org.

I’m fine with working more within reason honestly, my current role I could likely do my full week in a single day (which is nice), but also insanely unfulfilling. As long as I’m not working every night and weekend I think I’d be fine doing like full 40-45 hours for a 20-30% pay increase.

I dont think the warnings from Amazonians about earning their pay is bc they have to work the "full" 40-45 hours, lol.

It's very dependent on the organization you join. Amazon is notorious for being bad at information sharing and pacing themselves if you're in the wrong team. The best way to get a handle on this is to ask someone internal to look at their ticket queue and see how bad the ticket flow is, as well as how often they meet their commitments.

AWS - hands down. Why is this even a question?

Microsoft pmsquared OP Jul 8, 2019

Interesting, you still at MS or moved over? This was mainly to hear opinions from outside my direct network who are mostly MS and Google employees/fans. Only know a few personally at AWS. The benefits and WLB seem a bit worse but other than that seems pretty good.

USA just won the FWWC 19 after beating Netherlands. If you could choose to be part of either of the teams which one would you pick?

I love AWS, I’m non tech, and have a great wlb. I used to worked for Microsoft and haven’t looked back.
