After-tax 401k contributions

If a 401k plan allows “after-tax” contributions, do these contributions still have to come out of your regular paycheck, or can they be deposited/transferred directly from another source? I’m trying to determine if I could transfer RSU comp into my 401k upon vesting for eventual Backdoor Roth IRA.

I think only through payroll... interested in hearing if someone had deposited the rsus before...

Ok - I suppose I could do it more roundaboutly by upping my deductions the next year and cashing out into savings to offset the dip in pay
